Antec Solo 92mm fan

Post by Gunzee » Thu May 10, 2007 11:17 am

Hi,

I just finished building my PC. So far, I overclocked my E6420 to 3GHZ. Currently looking for two 92mm fan to cool things inside. I read somewhere that some 92mm may not fit in the casing(probably the scythe 92mm)? Does anyone have any good recommendation for a quiet/silent 92mm fan for Antec Solo case?

Thanks.

You probably don't need two 92mm fans front. One at 7v or 5v should be enough. But if you want, go ahead, I like to use all fan spots in my cases.

Anyway, Nexus RealSilent 92mm and NoiseBlocker BlackSilent XE1 are currently one of the best 92mm silent fans in the markets.

I have two 92mm Nexus Real Silent fans at 7v in the front, with both the fan grill and the dust filter on, the both of them together are quiet enough to remain inaudible over the rest of my system. I have never had any Noiseblocker fans, but I am really quite pleased with my Nexus fans, I can definitly recommend them.

I'm running a 92mm Nexus Real Silent in my Solo, at 5.5V as spot-cooling for the HDD. Does a great job and is completely inaudible from about 2-3 feet away.

Unfortunately, there is no local shop here that have the Nexus Real Silent fan.

What about Panaflo 92mm Ultra Quiet Fan? Is it any good?

As a last resort, I'll get the Scythe 100mm fan and cut it to fit the Antec Solo?

Hello,

Could you please tell me, the exact height of Antec Solo in centimeters?

I thought that was the same case (at size) as P150, but Antec's site says:

Antec Solo: Height 17.5" (44.45cm)
Antec P150: Height 17" (43,18cm)

My case is under a furniture, so is vital for me to know exactly.

Thanks in advance.

You can use a Scythe 100mm fan in the bottom fan mount without any modification, just you need to make new fan mounting holes if you want to use 2 Scythe 100mm fans.

It's 17.25" which is 43.815 cm if my conversion is correct.

Hello,

I am quite happy with 2x Papst 3412 N/2GLLE 92mm fans in my Solo. According to mfg specs, they run full speed at 1150rpm, 33m2/h and 12db. Q-Fan on my P5B has them running so low that the rpms can't be read (but they are rotating!). I do not hear them over the rest of my system.

Regards

This is good to know. I plan to put one at the top slot. From the sound of it, I won't have any problem, unless I put another one at the bottom.

Just to add about the 100mm fan, I've used velcro dots to secure a fan to the case. Haven't had any problems. This could be an alternative to drilling new mounting holes in your case.

Just putting that out there.

I saw the new Scythe Minebea Nmb Silent Ic 92MM Cooling Fan 1400RPM 18DBA 24.7CFM at NCIX. Decided the spec look good, purchased two. Hopefully, it will be quiet and keep the inside cool.

I got some Scythe 92mm Case Fans - DFS922512L from Jab-Tech and I didn't notice any undesirable noise. I tried them at 12v just to see how they sounded and then I put one one 7v and kept the other as a spare.

I don't see any reason to bother with the 100mm scythe when the 92mm scythe is cheap and easy to come by...

Ok. these Scythe Minebea Nmb Silent fans are not as good as I hoped(both 92mm and 120mm). They make the humming noise. It's tolerable, but not what I expected, silent, as the name suggested.

I put a couple of Scythe 2100rpm (3610KL-04W-B29-F51) in the front of a NSK3300 which is sitting next to the monitor. Argh, the roaring... I almost returned them but used a FanMate to determine what speed was acceptable. Using MB monitoring (abit NF-M2), they faded into the background below 950rpm. So I did some cutting on the included 4 pin adapter to 5 volt them. I also used a Y splitter so only one MB connector is needed. They run at ~2200 unmodified. The math says they should run at ~900 5 volted but the MB reports ~800. At this slow speed HD and MB temps still dropped 3-4c.

A single 1500rpm Nexus was too loud for my tastes.

I also tried a pair of 9db, 1100rpm Silenx IXTREMA. They weren't very silent, probably because they ran ~1200rpm. They have a cheap feel to them and are twice the price of the Scythe's.

I can't find any 92mm fans that run unmodified under 1000rpm so any solution will involve some means of voltage reduction through h/w or s/w.

Just noticed new casefan from Sharkoon: Silent Eagle 1500 92mm. As the 120mm ones have gotten good reviews, this might just be a great 92mm alternative!

I just replaced the Scythe Minebea Nmb Silent 120mm fan with a yate loon 120mm fan. Now, the loudest fan noise is the damn 8800gts video card fan. Anything I can do?

How are you guys measuring the voltage on the fans? Software? Fan controllers? DMM?

It's not about measuring the fan. It's about how you connect the fan. I honestly don't care if my fans are at 4.872 or 5.000 volts just so long as they aren't at 12 volts.

If you plug it into a 4 pin molex connector like the one used for an IDE hard drive you are plugging it into a connector that can provide 12v and 5v. Hard drives will use both but fans will only use the 12v.

If you modify your molex connector you can move the 5v pin to the location where the 12v pin used to be and even though the fan "expects" 12v it will get 5v. If you modify it slightly differently you can give it 12-5=7v. The numbers are approximate as each power supply will vary on how much it actually gives.

If the fan has a 3 pin connector instead of a 4 pin molex you can use a fan header on the motherboard and control the fan with speedfan or you can use a power cable adapter to connect the 3pin fan to a modified 4 pin molex connector at your choice of 5, 7, or 12 volts.

You could use any one of several other methods to provide non standard voltages but with the right fan you might be happy just knowing how to use the existing hardware to provide lower voltages.

See http://www.silentpcreview.com/article6-page1.html for the basics

If you want to get more complicated take a peek at viewtopic.php?t=22943

And if you hate doing it yourself just Google/Froogle up some 7V Y cables or a fan controller with dials and pay for a prewired solution.
