Accelero S1 + Turbo Module using my 9800 GT fan header?

Post by krick » Fri Nov 21, 2008 10:21 am

I picked up a Palit 9800 GT...

...along with an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev.2 and the "turbo module"...

The fans are wired together in series and have a single standard 3-pin motherboard fan header connector.

I'm thinking about replacing the fan connector so that I can plug it into the video card itself (like the factory fan) instead of my motherboard.

Will it work? Is this even a good idea? Could it damage anything?

AFAIK the video cards don't use a 3-pin connector, but a 4-pin one for a PWM fan.
IMO you could damage the card by plugging the Turbo module into a 4-pin header (are you sure it's possible?).
But it should work fine plugged into a motherboard 3-pin header or a fan controller.
Of course, the card won't be able to adjust the speed, but should work even without sensing a 4-pin PWM fan.

The picture on newegg is an older version of the card that used a 4-pin PWM fan. My card only has a 2-pin fan header. Yet, it adjusts the speed of the stock fan by itself just fine. Apparently, it must adjust the voltage to control the fan speed.

I'm going to get one of these adapters and try plugging the turbo module into my card to see what happens...

It would have been nicer to specify the 2-pin fan header in the first post.
Well, it should work, assuming the 2 pins are 12V and ground and you'll get the right connections. Good luck!
PS. For a 9800GT, even slightly overclocked, setting the Turbo module to 5-6V would provide enough airflow.
Depending on how good your case airflow is, you could even run it passive, but with the Turbo module at 5-6V you'd have good temps too.

Sorry about that. I actually didn't notice that when I wrote it. I just looked at the newegg pics and assumed my card had a 4-pin header. Then when I installed the Accelero I noticed that it's only a 2-pin job.
