*** POLL is ONLY a Presentation of what i think is a silent option - no need to vote ***

I need help and final decision on what fans to order to get this case going. I`ll present couple of options than you can decide or suggest your own.

Configuration:

EVGA E-GEFORCE 9800GTX+
Thermalright HR-01 Plus
Corsair HX520W CMPSU
ASUS P5Q Pro
Samsung Spinpoint F1
Mushkin XP PC2-8000 Redline 4GB
Antec P182
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Samsung SyncMaster T240
5-6 fans

I am looking for silence or close to it.

*** Option #1 ***
FAN #1 TOP: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #2 EXAUST: Scythe SLIP STREAM 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #3 CPU: Scythe SLIP STREAM 120 mm @ 500rpm
FAN #4 INTAKE top: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #5 BOTTOM psu/hdd: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 1200rpm
FAN #6: NONE

*** Option #2 ***
FAN #1 TOP: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #2 EXAUST: Scythe SLIP STREAM 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #3 CPU: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 1200rpm
FAN #4 INTAKE top: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 800rpm
FAN #5 BOTTOM psu/hdd: Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm @ 1200rpm
FAN #6: NONE

whats your choice :?:

Why not just fan #2 and block the top vent, and a good quiet PSU below to cool the HDD.

I would think the video card would be the noise maker. so running a 1200 sythe shouldn't be louder than that card.

Thank you!

Corsair HX520 i believe is very silent (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article699-page1.html)

S-FLEX vs SLIP STREAM

Post by redsun » Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:06 pm

i believe if i am not wrong:

SLIP STREAM is good for non restrictive airflow spots (thus, is made for exhaust/rear), also its not a good idea to place SLIP STREAM fan horizontaly

S-FLEX is good for restrictive areas such as the intake spot behind the dust grill of the P182 case and in mid of the psu and lower HDD cage

for your system configuration, i suggest 2 or at most 3 fans total will be more than enough.

the spinpoint 1TB is a really quiet and cool drive. putting in in the bottom cage the PSU fan is enough to keep the noise out and it less than 40C even at load. mine load at around 35C.

remove the top HDD cage, add fan #4 to force some cool air around the 9800GTX+ and then one of #1/#2 will be more than sufficient.

If he uses a PSU like Corsair which is a 120mm fan, how will that cool the harddrives? Won't the exhaust just point downwards?

The fan blows into the PSU and the air exits through the vent which is located at the back of the case. But I thought that was a given. :lol:

My choice:
Fan 1: None
Fan 2: S-Flex @500-600
Fan 3: S-Flex @500-600
Fan 4: S-Flex @800-900 (depends on the graphic card)
Fan 5: None
Fan 6: None

The function of Fan 1 doesn't make any sense to me. Also if you want silence, you don't want an exhaust on top I guess.
Fan 2-4 make a nice airflow, and should keep your CPU cool easy.
I would be more concerned about your GPU. You should supply some fresh air. Therefore fan 4 should provide more than fan 2/3 move out of the case.
Fan 5 and 6 will not help very much. The internal fan of the power supply should handle the airflow to cool the drive(s) easily.

I doubt you need any fans in the bottom with just 1 HD there.

I've found if I leave the top open and the back on 800 I get lower temps without increase in noise.

I ahven't tried top only yet.

i think he isn't aware of the fact that the PSU mount on the P18x is elevated. that leaves a gap below the PSU to allow air to pump through the PSU by the downward pointing fan..

Code: Select all

switch (fan) {
    case 1:
    case 2:
    case 3:
    case 4:
        Scythe_SFLEX_1200rpm(); /* Undervolt to 7V if needed */
        break;
    case 5:
    case 6:
        None();
        break;
    default:
        break;
}

But doesn't that work only if the back parts of the PSU are sealed?

The 120mm fan in the PSU is an intake, not an exhaust. The exhaust is the mesh at the back.
But doesn't that work only if the back parts of the PSU are sealed?
To get significant airflow through the P18x lower chamber without any additional fans, you must cover up the CASE vents SURROUNDING the rear of the PSU, but not the vents of the PSU itself (dangerous). I'm guessing that's maybe what you meant anyway, but I figured better safe than sorry :)

Beware: If the PSU fan is your only source of airflow for the lower chamber, then whenever you have the side off your case there will be no significant airflow over your drives and they will heat up a lot more than usual.
