Noiseblocker or Noctua 140mm horizontal

Post by tntnt » Wed May 19, 2010 5:21 pm

Hi,

I need a silent 140 fan to put on the top of my case (exhaust)

- Noiseblocker XK2 (NB-longlife sleeve bearings)
or
- Noctua NF-P14 FLX (SSO bearings)

I know that sleeve bearings are not a very good option for horizontal mount, but...

Thanks!

I'm wondering about this fan too, I want use the Noise Blocker 140mm in the top spot my Antec 300. The Noctua won't fit since its has weird mounting holes. This Noise Blocker fan is expensive too $25.00 US and 140MM Yate Loon is $4.00 US but Yates tend be iffy with mounting horizontally. The Noise Blocker has six year warranty so must be good fan.

As far as i know sleeve bearings are ok for horizontal positions but not vertical.
Ball bearings are ok for both

Given you could buy 6 Yate Loons for the same price, and they do work fine for a while horizontally.... I've had them mounted horizontally for 18 months or so, but even if you expect them to only last 12 months..... you've just got 6 for the price of one noise blocker.

Just a thought :)

I know you can get YL's for just dollars in the US, but where can you get them for cheap in Aus?

Both gammods and pccg have them, not as cheap tho. If you order a decentamount it's probably cheaper to order them from the us. I got a bunch from petras tech shop a while back for about $8 each (shipped)

PCCG only has a 50mm fan and a 140mm fan, neither of which are useful (to me). Good info on gammods though, they don't show up on Static Ice, so I never knew there was a store in Aus that stocked YL fans.
How much does shipping usually cost from PTS? Man, YL fans are dirt cheap in the US...

PCCG has nexus, which are basically re-labeled YL's (although apparently higher QC?), 5 for $49, which isn't too bad.

There was some discussion a while back on the apparent different types of YL fans available, and PTS's where supposed to be better than the other ones available. Not sure if its still the case, and PTS apparently stopped shipping internationally, although I haven't asked myself, so not 100% sure of that either. However, they have partnered up with sidewindercomputers, which do ship (and have a handy shipping calculator).

Anyway, its only worth ordering from the US if you do a decent size order, as the shipping is expensive.

4x YL = $51 USD shipped (from sidewinders, to sydney)
8x YL = $81 USD shipped
12x YL = $111 USD shipped
16x YL = $139 USD shipped or $168 AUD, which is about $10 AUD per fan, which is what gammods sells em for.

It seems with the dollar dropping, its not worth it unless you buy a huge amount.

Does someone have experience of that Noctua mentioned above, i.e. Noctua NF-P14 FLX, how silent it is in real life? Has SPCR reviewed this fan?

I have now Noctua NF-S12B-ULN in my HTPC and I am planning to add a 140 mm fan together with NF-S12B-ULN, so the 140 mm fan should be at least as silent as NF-S12B-ULN is (which is very silent).

Thanks!

I use and would recommend the Fractal Design 140mm, from sources such as http://www.jimmspc-store.fi/tuote/FD-FAN-140?t=false. It moves a fair amount of air at 600 rpm, (approximately the same as a 120mm at 1000 rpm) and yes it is very silent.
