Zalman CNPS-7000 reviewed on LostCircuits.

Post by powergyoza » Fri Mar 21, 2003 6:52 pm

I think this is the 1st review I've seen of this product that criticises it for low retension mechanism pressure. Zalman, haven't you learned from your previous mistakes yet?

Having one on the way, I'm glad to see they mention it can be fixed very easily tho..

Whats interesting though is they aslo have a review of the Thermalright SLK-800, and it won editors choice. SLK-900 performs even better than the SLK-800.
http://www.lostcircuits.com/advice/slk800/

So SLK-900 vs CPNS7000.

What is your conclusion, my one favours the SLK-900. :D

I personally don't have either one yet (the 7000 arrives Tuesday). On the down side for the 900 (I'm not bashing either one yet), if the fins are aligned the wrong way, you will be blowing hot air straight into your posssibly temp-controlled P/S causing it to run fast/louder than it should.. I understand it's not a problem with all mobos, but some. I guess sometimes we must understand there is no 'nirvana'..

They must have got a bum one....I purchased one from Newegg's first shipment and the tension on the bracket was adequate. You don't really realize how enormous and heavy this sucker is until you hold it in your hands! Performance-wise it equals my MCX4000 with a lot less noise....I picked up a new mb heatsink bracket with a steel backplate to prevent board warping, as it's always made me nervous.

CNPS-7000 AlCu vs. Cu

Post by Francis » Mon Mar 24, 2003 5:31 pm

The lostcircuits review says the performance differences between the AlCu and Cu models are very slight. Anyone disagree with this? I'm pretty lazy - I don't want the risk of a wopping all copper heatsink, nor do I look forward into a complicated installation with the new Thermalright SLK-900 - so the AlCu model appeals to the laziness in me. (I looked at the website instructions for the SLK-900 which were less than crystal clear to me - is this something only for the experienced?)

All of the reviews I've seen so far only mention the AlCu model in passing. I'm not planning on overclocking, I just want a quieter PC. Is the CNPS-7000 AlCu a safe bet?

I have been thinking about the AlCU because of the weight issue but right now I'm still tempted to go with the full copper version unless I start hearing first hand accounts about problems.

So far all the reviews say the CU seems very solid when installed.

I have mine installed as of today, I'm seeing 86f for the MB temp and 105f for the p4 2.0A temp. Does anyone think the CPU temp might be a little high? My Maxtor 160gb is showing 96f additionally.

Those temps look ok to me. Are you using the 7000CU or AlCU?

If you are getting that temp under 100% load with lowest fan settting that sounds just great.
I tested mine (2.53) with stock before oc'ing and I was getting around 44c under load with lowest fan setting (CNPS-7000Cu). Right now, it is running around 53c at 1900 RPM (OC'd to 2.98 at 1.625v). I am rather impressed as I was getting around 59c at 2200RPM with CNPS-5700Cu under same 2.98 at 1.625v (which still is better than retail HS which I had to pretty much stop oc'ing due to heat issue)
One thing I noticed was this 92mm fan in Zalman is really quiet for its fan size and flow rate... wonder if they have totally different fan maker now. (even comparing to their FB-123 92mm fan)

That temp is normal idle. Under heavy load it goes to 115f

pcweltz; what is a 'motherboard heatsink bracket'?

Im interested in getting this zalman, but im not sure about whether the Cu, or the AlCu... Im scared about board warping, but what is your solution, and will it work? Is the zalman retention mechanism not very good?

I do move my machine a bit, so i'd rather not need a forklift, but if it is significantly better, i'm happy to grow bigger muscles.

what say you (all)!

I am only going with the 7000Cu for the fact that its cheaper, has a fan mate, and comes with a fan(yeah yeah I know not a Panaflo!).

Replacement 478 retention mechanism w/ steel backplate, prevents board warping from heatsink pressure.

Damn! Those guys dont ship to australia... anyone have any clues on finding these babies in AU?

Cyrix: Did you mean the AlCu model? Prices i have seen all point to the AlCu being the cheaper model.

Hmm, yes, they are also available from www.pccasegear.com {an aussie website} - cheaper there too...

I actually meant those steel-backplated retention mechanisms... the site pcweltz listed doesnt ship to australia :(

koninc: No I was refering to the 7000Cu, I've seen as low as $45usd. I'm not sure if I recall seeing the SLK-900U for that price.

Hi, like koninc i dont know if i should take the Cu or the AlCu. If the cooling characteristics of the AlCu aren`t more badly then the of the Cu, i would prefer the AlCu.
I would do so, because the Cu is much more heavily, and i fear that transporting mit pc in car isn`t safe.

And here in germany i haven`t found a dealer, where i can buy the 478 retention mechanism with steel backplate.

I would be glad if someone colud make my decision easier.

I can't speak to any other differences between the units but a few web reviews did test both AlCU and CU. They showed the 7000CU cooling better by 3-4C under load, if I remember correctly. You might want to find the reviews yourself to confirm.

I don't know how much 3-4 degrees are worth to you.

The only review comparing the Cu and the AlCu version, ist at http://www.casejunkies.com, but i want to buy the wrong cooler because there may be some mistake in one review.

There is more than one review comparing the AlCU and CU.

Nordic Hardware, for instance, has similar empirical results. It shows 3C difference with both running at 2400RPM, and greater differences when both are slowed to 1350RPM.

There is no doubt in my mind all copper will be superior... simle thing is that copper transmits 2x better than aluminum.... not to mention having added gap for heat to travel in dual integration of materials...

I believe that the Cu is better then the AlCu, but i think the Cu is too heavy, as that i can move my computer in a car, without damaging anything.
Thats why im thinking about the AlCu version, but if the cooling performance of the AlCu is too bad, i have to look fpr an other cooler.

What would you say to be the better cooling solution for a P4 [email protected]; the SLk900U with a 92 papst fan, or the Zalman 7000 AlCu ?

Or is there no big difference between the cooling performance of this two coolers?

Well not owning either of the two, I'd hazard a guess that the SLK900U is better when using any fan!
There's lots of reviews on the net but I don't think I've come across a comparison between these two big dogs.
The SLK900 is more versatile because you can swap fans around. With the zalman, you're pretty much stuck with what they give you.

For someone who need to carry stuff I guess SLK-900 would be better with its bolted installation with backplate than. :P
Why go for 2nd tier when price differentials are so negligible? Either SLK-900 or CNPS-7000 CU.
(Those extra 3-5c difference vs $5-10 is no brainer)
