My future system: will it be reasonnably quiet?
The idea is finding a good balance between perf (O/C)and quietness:
- Case: Undecided between Silverstone TJ06/Antec SLK3000B/Antec P180 (depending on future reviews)
- CPU: Athlon64 3200 Venice Core
- Mobo: DFI UT Lanparty NF4 DR
- RAM: 1Gb G.Skill PC4400
- VGA: ATI X800XL (or 6800GT with SLi mobo...not sure)
- HDD: Maxtro 6B200MO 200Gb SATA II
- PSU: Fortron AX500-A Blue Storm
- HS: XP-120 + Delta 120mm EFB1212LE (76CFM/2000RPM/34dbA)
- Sunbeam Rheobus
Optional: Nexus 120mm Fan to replace PSU stock fan
What do you think?
Any advice on how to make this more silent without sacrificing perf and overclocking ability would be great! I'll also appreciate any advice regarding the choice of components

You likely won't like the active HSF on the nF4 chip, but something like a Zalman NB47J is a possibility, either with some bending/trimming of fins for a VGA above it or putting your VGA in the other slot (moving SLI jumpers to SLI, even on Ultra board).
An X800XL or 6800GT will likely be loud. If you want one of those, you might end up wanting a VF700 or VGA Silencer. There might be a passively cooled X800XL out there.
As you can see, my system is fairly similar.

Here is my NB47J installation with a 6800GT above it. I used needle-nosed pliers to bend and wire cutters to cut the fins. It isn't difficult. There are other similar postings. If you search for "NB47J" you should find them.
You could put an unmodified NB47J on the chipset and put your VGA in the bottom slot. I measured virtually zero performance drop in 3DMark05 with it in the bottom slot at 8x vs. top slot at 16x.
I ended up in the top slot so that my VF700 outflow could blow through the NB47J.

Personally I would start out with a quieter fan on the CPU. Then I would look at the northbridge and quieter VGA cooling as already suggested. They will both be annoying stock, at least I would find them to be annoying. I would get a Seasonic over a Fortron but both are reasonable choices and in fact I use both myself in different systems.
And most results show Seagate being a little quieter, if a tad slower, or Samsung which seems to be quieter but again slower. Still they are all in the same performance category, especially the Seagate SATA w/NCQ.

_g,
If you get the 38mm delta the side duct if you use it is going to be really close to the top of the fan with the xp-120. If you want a delta get the 25mm triple blade low speed. Its got a little motor/bearing noise at low rpms but tends to go away around 650>. Its actually a pretty good fan. A better choice would be the JMC1225L from www.jmcproducts.com - FG
