Lian Li 6070B and 120mm exhaust fan.
Hi,
Before I go buying an expensive 120mm fan, I put my question here..
I was thinking of putting a 120mm exhaust fan on my 6070B using a fan adapter. Both the adapter and the fan will be mounted on the outside of the case.
The I was thinking, the only holes for air intake is the front fan holes so why should I put fans there ? Cant I use the exhaust fan for sucking the air through the case ? Then I would get rid of 2 noise sources.
First, what do you think of this idea ?
Second, has anyone tried putting a fan adapter + fan outside the case ? How does the noise improve ?
Third, what do you think of the Lian Li 6070B all in all ?
Thanks!
ps. Sorry for my bad english...

I haven't tried this but the external 120mm does not seem like it would be great at quieting things down to me. Removing your intake fans can do some good, personally I prefer to use very low rpm intake fans though, it may have been my imagination but they seemed to very slighty quiet the HDD sounds that escape through my bottom intake and the fans themselves I just can't hear.

Well, I thought about the turbulence too. Isn't the turbulence big when you try blowing air FROM 120mm TO 80mm and a bit smaller when blowing air FROM 80mm TO 120mm. ?
I haven't really thought about what you said about that having the fan outside the case instead of inside the case would be more noisy, thanks!
I can not fit another 80mm och 90mm in the back Thats a big problem with the Lian Li 6070B.
Thank for the replies!

Hi P,
I'm not really sure about the turbulence. I do think it would be better to have the fan inside since even flush mounted fans are potential noise sources. I'll look up your case and see if I get any ideas. Putting the 120 on is probably worth a try and it might work out just fine. If it turns out to be noisy you can build a baffle or silencer to go around the fan - sort of an case extension. I think one of the lian-li cases has something like this, the 1000 model?

In general using a 80->120mm adapter yields no better airflow than just using a 80mm fan at the same noise level. The only major reason to use fan adaptors is for heatsinks, because it allows more airflow to get to the center fins, which is where heatsinks are usually the hottest, or because quiet fans of that particular size are not available (60mm being a prime example). Seeing as it would be outside the case I would guess that it would be even louder for the same airflow than an internal 80mm. A better solution would be to mod the hole and cut out the grill of the fan. If you could enlarge the hole so that a 92mm fan could be fit that would help too.

P,
I think elexer is right. The idea of the reducer would be to allow you to run the 120 at a lower speed than the 80 and still move just as much air - not to move more air. I think you would have a lot more flexibility overall if you put 1 or 2 80's in the front and 1 in the back and have the ability to adjust them to a a good sound/cooling level. - FG

Thanks a lot guys, you are being really helpful!
Btw, here's a picture of the case Im using.

P,
I looked at the photos of your case and the one 80mm rear exhaust looks really inadequate. If you have a 120mm psu that will help exhaust hot air and what about an 80 to 90mm adapter that could go on the inside the case or even outside if you want. Even the 80 to 120 might be worth a try. I see now why you wanted a bigger fan here. - FG

P,
There are other people on the site that have that case (I think), but If you had a 3000B or 3700 your case would have a better cooling design and you wouldn't need adapters. I thought you already had the 6070 in which case I'm sure you could improve the cooling, but after seeing that picture I realized that the 1 80mm could be improved upon. But a lot of readers have a 3000B or 3700. - FG
