Whats the deal with Nexus 120mm fans?

Post by BenW » Mon Apr 25, 2005 10:50 pm

I see that most of you use nexus 120mm fans in your cases but....why?

I know you have a thing about silent X whos fans seem to have much better specs on paper, things like noiseblocker and acoustifan also seem to have similar or better specs.

So, why nexus?

Just one of those newbie questions!

Manufacturers specs should be taken with less than a grain of salt, especially SilenX's claims.

The Nexus 120mm fans are very quiet indeed, moreso than any of the competition, and they move enough air for most applications. The quality is also very consistent with them.

Because we don't care about paper specs, as they are mostly not correct.

Basically a fan can make noise in three ways. Motor noise, bearing noise, wind noise. The Nexus fans make not/hardly any of the two first types of noise. The third type can be reduced by running the fan slower. The Nexus fan already turns quite slow.

SO most forum members would say they are the ONLY fans to buy?

The type of fan you should buy should depend on your specific requirements and applications. If you need to move more air quickly, you would probably want to buy a different fan. There are other good fan brands such as globe and panaflow.

The nexus fans are supposedly repackaged yate loon fan.

I would say that the only 120mm fan to buy for CPU heatsink or case fan is the Yateloon D12SL and a fan controller. These guys are roughtly 1.5x less expensive than the Nexus and are basicaly the same fan - just 300rpm or 200rpm faster spining.

For radiators, get a 38mm type fan...

Of course the Nexus fans are rebranded (and slightly modified) Yate Loon D12SL-12 fans. But the problem with most of the cheap Yate Loon deals you can find on these forums is that they are in the US (and one in Germany). Since the original poster lives in the UK, that might be more hassle than the price difference is worth. (If the seller wants to ship intercontinental at all.) If the OP was living in Australia, then we would probably advise him the even more expensive SilenX fans, as the others are not availlable there.

So you see, as always there is no simple answer.

So to sum it up: in the real world the Nexus is the quietest 120mm fan you can buy. Simple as that.

They aren't the only fan to buy as they are low airflow so not suitable for all applications, but for most SPCR'ers they are enough. my two Nexus 120mms are the only fans in my entire system, and I run them at 7V most of the time.

So if i had this setup would it be almost silent?

SilentX PSU (<14dB)
Silverstone TJ-04 case with rear grill cut away
Thermalright XP-120 with 120mm Nexus at 5v or 7v
1 rear nexus at 7v or 12v
Suspended Samsung SPinpoint (JVC Motor which i find quiet in a suspension)

Just that i want to get the silverstone case, new motherboard and the thermalright heatsink then get some fans at a later date

Thanks
Ben

There are no consistent standards used by the various manufacturers for measuring sound pressure level of equipment, so that is why most people who have tested SilenX stuff don't trust their published dB levels. If you want a PSU with a fan, the Seasonic S12-430 or 380 would be quieter, regardless of what SilenX claims.

Supposedly, the Nidec motors are quieter than JVC. Personally, I have some new Western Digital FDB drives and am very happy with them.

I have Nexus 120 fans for CPU (XP-120) and rear case exhaust. I run both at 12V. There may be a slightly audible noise (very slight), but they don't move much air below 1000 PRM (the speed at 12V). No 120 mm fan moves much air below 1000 RPM. So far, the noise level of my machine is so low, that I have not been motivated enough to try the fan speed controller that my MB bios has available.

Thats good to hear!

Don't want to get into replacing the PSU until i need something with more power (Got a 300W at the moment)

Yea i heard t he nidec motors are quieter and i believe it for a stanadard mounted drive but when suspended i cant believe they're much quieter than my JVC

What CPU are you using at what are your temps? I've got a P4 2.26 533FSB Northwood which seems to have an average heat output. So what CPU have you got and what are the cpu temps?

Thanks
Ben

My AMD64 3500+ runs at about 38C idle, but I have not yet enabled Cool'n'Quiet. However, there are no standards for CPU temp, and some motherboards report the core temps (Soltek) and others report the heat spreader temp. There can be a 10-15C difference between the two.

The sensors are not very accurate either. So for me, I don't think it is much to worry about unless the temps are way out of whack. Some others on this forum are more concerned about it then me.
