New Samsung drives officially posted. One is a 2.2 bel idle.

I seriously hope that they are quieter than the old P80 series. I paid extra to get 2 Nidec 160Gb 7200rpm 8Mb IDE ones. 1 was great, just as people have said. The other was terrible, much louder idle whine than any of my other drives. I returned it and they sent me a JVC, the JVC is better than the faulty Nidec, but it does have a lot of idle whine that is easily noticeable at night.
I really hope these new drives from Komplett are the business. If so, they are going to be getting an order from me!

That isn't hardware RAID anyway, so you better use native linux software raid functionality. Check http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html#nvidia for more info.atus wrote: - haven't found any Linux NVRaid drivers on the Net
Hi! Thanks for the link.
If I only used Linux, software RAID would obviously be the best choice. It could very well be faster too. But I'm also using Windows. Here are my findings and points to note:
- the reason I'm using RAID-1 is to be able to continue immediately if one drive fails. So Windows boot partition is kind of a necessity.
- it's not possible to use a Windows boot partition without the NVRaid disk at installation, using only the Windows software RAID
- but NVRaid puts the whole of both drives into a logical unit
- I checked and with a recent Linux kernel it's still possible to handle the two drives independently, even though the BIOS RAID setting puts the two volumes into one logical unit
- so it seems I can install Linux on an empty partition of one of the disks -- that's good, but since it's only on one disk, it's not redundant
- unfortunately it doesn't seem possible -- without a third mass-storage device at least -- to write files in Linux, and use them in Windows. That's because Linux isn't able to write the nVidia RAIDed partitions.
I have recently found a development effort called "DMRaid" which is supposed to handle nForce RAID volumes. What is uncertain is if it's a standard part of the Linux kernel, if it also handles nForce 4 RAID volumes, and if it is able to boot Linux from a RAIDed partition. I think I'll leave the Linux partition reserved until the above questions are clear. Don't want to endanger my data in any way.
Bye!

I haven't had time to use the drive much yet but so far its comparable to my old Spinpoint (160Gig JVC), the idle noise is different but not substantially better or worse (there were 'good' JVC models from what i remember, so its possible i have one of those). The read / write noise is a lot lower at the moment, but a large part of that may well be down to the drive not being fragmented. Not sure if the drive will 'burn' in, over a few hours use.
No idea whether they're all Nidec's or not, but i'd suspect all of the drives in the current batch will be.
I'll have time to install windows over the weekend and if theres anything interesting to report i'll post back. So far though, its much of the same but with a slight space and speed boost.

This P120 SATA Series Spec Sheet suggests the 200GB utilising 100GB platters, in contrast to 125GB in the 250GB. That explains the not-so-high (average) read speed posted by some owners here.
i will be picking up another 3.5" HD on saturday (tomorrow) so i'd like to quickly hear if anyone has experience with both a P80 and P120. i just want to know about the acoustics. 160GB will be sufficient and performance not important, so if the older P80 has the better acoustics i will probably get one of those (motor is a non-issue, nidecs are everywhere here). i've used a 160GB spinpoint (nidec) before and it was good, but if the newer drives are same or even better i may aswell get them. i've searched for "P120 AND P80" but couldn't find an authoritative answer, i am aware that samsung rates the P120 as quieter but i have more faith in opinion of an spcr member..
My SP2014N has a faint, directional whine but its much softer in comparison to my old SP1614N with a whiny JVC motor. Seek noise wise, both drives are about the same in magnitude with the SP2014N having a slightly higher pitch. Some (this may apply to all but I am not sure yet) new 200+ GB Samsungs (both ATA and SATA versions) do seem to have a head parking noise that is not heard in the older Samsung drives (it is a distinctive metal to metal scraping sound that is heard after the drive is powered off).wim wrote:i will be picking up another 3.5" HD on saturday (tomorrow) so i'd like to quickly hear if anyone has experience with both a P80 and P120. i just want to know about the acoustics.
Well, that's my experience with my SP2014N so far. Hope this sheds some light to the new Samsung HDDs.
