Quiet and cheap power supplies?

Post by fanerman91 » Sat Aug 20, 2005 4:46 pm

I made a thread before asking about it for my roommate and people recommended the Fortron FSP300-60PN. Now I need one for my mom's comp, because I upgraded her computer and it looks like her old PSU can't handle it. However, the Fortron's not on newegg anymore. Is there another quiet PSU at about the same price range? Under $30. Thanks everybody.

I found this list the other day -http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/s ... p?t=136602

extremeoverclocking has a pretty good test methodolody for power supplies but I'm not sure how they compiled the list.

The enermax noisetaker is a good deal at newegg. I have one and a similar model has been tested at spcr -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817103449

That noisetaker isn't under $30. He said under $30.

What I have done is buy a $15 generic PSU, and enlarge the heatsinks on the PSU. then i swapped the crappy fan for a Nexus120 fan. it worked well except for the horrible voltage regulation. well, you can't expect much from a cheap PSU. anything over 120W (and this was a "520W" PSU) would cause the computer to spontaneously reboot. so the answer is that it can be done but don't expect good quality from it. if you have the cash go for a seasonic super tornado 300, those are $40 at some places.

$10-15 for PSU
$10 for 120mm Yate Loon fan at CompUSA
--------------------------------------------------
$20-$25

Here's a link for the fortron - http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?src=FG&item=57559.

There are several other online stores that have them. Use www.froogle.com and search for FSP300-60PN.

Also a sparkle fsp300-60PN is the same as a fortron and I do believe those are in at newegg. - FG

Unless you live in a small town or something, there must be a few local computer stores for you to shop at. I bought the forementioned Tornado for a good price at one, and have seen the Fortron PSU for cheap as well. You just have to search and shop... sometimes quite thoroughly.

For the Canadians out here, NCIX still has FSP300s in stock. $37 as a Fortron... $34 as a Sparkle, otherwise identical
