What was the reason for ignoring hd cooling in the p180...

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

What was the reason for ignoring hd cooling in the p180...

It just seems like a weird choice and I'm now thinking of moving the drives up to the upper chamber. Everything else gets some attention (even the psu which already has it's own fans) but hard drives are completely ignored. I'm not to fond of having my archive drive at temps hovering around 40C.

If you tape over the back vents, the power supply will draw the air through the front vents and over the hard drives.

I'm pretty sure that the lower chamber is supposed to draw air front-to-back. Whatever way it has to, taping vents or whatever. Something about that air-filter-thing on the front....

How was HDD cooling ignored? Are you saying the channel fan in the bottom isn't enough?

Two things.

One, lower chamber temps are far from ignored, hence the included 38MM wide TriCool fan down there. And enough with "it won't fit with all my hard drives in the cage"...

For me this is a perfect setup. That fat TriCool on low speed keeps more than enough airflow running across the Raptors that they only surpass 34C under a stress test, and keeps the PSU cool enough that it's own fan barely runs. If I have to choose which item to replace first, better a $12 Antec fan than a $119 Seasonic power supply.

Two, if it can be avoided, don't put drives in the upper 3.5" bay, so as to maximize airflow from the upper intake. (That said I do have a 160G IDE drive in the upper bay)

temps aren't being affected. i guess i'll just replace a fan with a more effective fan.

Why don't you post complete system specs, and we can help you out ... how many drives are you running ... what PSU? what speed are you running the bottom fan?

like qviri said: tape over the back vents with duct tape and it forces air to be drawn through the front - accross the hdd cage. that's how i have mine set up and it runs very well (and cool). the fan is only on low and hdd temps never get above 35 (and thats an old 60GB Seagate) I'd leave the front air filter on, unless you have a REALLY clean environment.
