Coolermaster Aluminium 120mm

Post by kkzz » Tue Oct 11, 2005 8:12 am

Does anyone have any experience of these http://www.coolermaster-europe.com/inde ... _class=561 The stats look good but only one UK retailer (that I found) and expensive. Been lurking on this forum for a while now and I'm impressed, it's certainly given me some ideas

Welcome to SPCR! 8)

By all accounts, this fan is a Nexus killer. Where did you find it on sale in the UK? All CoolerMaster kit is difficult/impossible to find, since the demise of CoolerMaster UK. If you’ve found just one UK retailer, you’ve done well Sherlock.

Searched forums for 'aaf-b12-e1' and found these threads:

I searched extensively 6 weeks ago and found nothing. I just tried Googling again and e-components came up first go. Is this where you found it? It costs 50% more than a Nexus, but bare in mind it’s a very high quality fan made by BiSonic. Aluminum isn’t cheap either. What price can you put on having THE very best 120mm fan? Their price is probably VFM all things considered. I might order one tomorrow.

I couldn' resist them any longer so I've just ordered a couple from ecomponents .I'll let you know how they compare to the Acousti Dustproofs I'm using at the moment

Yes, I'm using one as my case exhaust fan. Cost $35AUD, brought from XCOM Tech(?) in Chinatown in Sydney.

There is a little bit of noise when run at 12v. I've used Speedfan to turn down the speed to 80% and I can't hear it at all. Noise from my hard disks is louder.

I do think it moves more air than the Antec fan that came with my case (SLK3700QBE) which I now use as an intake fan to cool the hard disk until I find something better. I base this upon the amount of air I feel on my hand. Very subjective, of course.

My only complaints are its 38mm thick, which is too thick to fit behind the SLK3700QBE front bezel (only takes 25mm fans) and too thick to mount on my CPU heatsink (again only takes 25mm fans). Also since the frame is alum it may be too heavy to mount on my CPU heatsink, even if it could fit.

Obviously it does not move the 55 cfm that they state, but would you say it's in the upper 40's low 50's at 12V. The antec fan that comes with the BQE is rated at 38 cfm.

Mine arrived today, all I had time to do was connect one to the fan controller and run it up and I am impressed so far. Shifts a lot of air with very low noise. Hopefully I'll have time at the weekend to install it properly. If I was running Cooler Master I'd be thinking about running heatpipe round the frame and another couple and some fins at the front for a CPU cooler. Or how about a PSU with one of these (if you could fit it in)? Probably too busy with the new Stacker 830 (just what would you put in it to require up to 9 120mm fans)

Sizzle.
You are most probably right. The fan most probably doesn't shift 55cfm of air as the specs say but you can say that of any fan specs from any manufacturer. Take the specs with a pinch of salt or, in same cases, a handful of salt.

I'm very happy with the fan. My only wishes are the frame was made of plastic and was 25mm thick.

I picked one up myself. Damn, very impressive. It's hard to say, but it is close to the airflow of my Papst 4412FGL which moves 55 cfm. Can't hear it at 6V.

I Just got one of these from ZipZoomFly. I have a 3200+ (fanless XP-120) in a 3000b and the only fan is a orange Yate Loon. I used SpeedFan to undervolt both fans to about 900rpm. The CPU and System temps with the Coolermaster was 1 degree higher. Drive Temps often went 2 degrees higher also. Worse, my fanless PSU was definately hotter than before. There is a terrible bearing noise that can be heard even when spinning the fan with your finger. Something not present in the YL. I'm not sure if I got a bad sample, but I have since put back my YL and will return this. Not at all impressed by this fan especially for $25.

How would it be different from other fans if it was 25mm thick?

Because then it wouldn't rip the HS of your mobo after prolonged use :D

On another note, e-components no longer sell the damn things, so now there are no UK suppliers. I emailed them, and they responded that they didn't have a definite enough supply to keep selling them.

I don't see how that would affect the weight much. The aluminum frame, yes, that makes it too heavy. If you want to use it on a heatsink in a tower case, you could remove most of the frame, perhaps everything but the corners. That should make it lighter than a 25mm thick fan, unless the impeller is metal.

Y'know, that sounds like a good idea, although it might be a bit louder without the stability of the frame.....

On second thoughts, I don't particularly want to hack up my fan, anyone fancy trying :D
