UPDATE: Zalman 7700 + ASUS A8N-SLi premium + X2 3800 sucess

Post by roaf85 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 2:10 pm

Ok I need system advice for a computer I will be putting together the end of this month. Since there is rebates on a lot of things I will be ordering by Christmas. I want to keep the price around 1,500 to 1,700. I do things such as some DVD Shrink, some VB.NET programming and tons of multitasking, like running 5 Internet Explorers, a game and something else. Pretty intensive at times. Also some moderate gaming. I really do not want to have to upgrade for awhile either.

CPU: AMD X2 3800 $325 ($360 with Zalman 7000 HSF)
I am 100 percent sure I want this processor. I was thinking about adding in a Zalman 7000 heatsink.

CASE: Sonata II $99
For around 100 dollars I could use the power supply in another system. Plus the problems with the Antec P150 Neo power supply make the Sonata a cheaper buy.

POWER SUPPLY: Seasonic S12 500 watt $129
Pricy and I could get away with the 430 watt, but I hear the new 430 watt model is louder and the extra connectors on the 500 watter make it so I will never have to buy a power supply again. I may be open to cheaper alternatives, but it is my understanding that most things do not come close to the noise level of the Seasonic before modding.

VIDEO CARD: Gigabyte 7800GT with zalman cooler $304 after rebate
35 dollar mail in rebate, free COD2, and the zalman cooler make it quiet and cheaper than buying a standard 7800 GT and zalman cooler separate

MEMORY: OCZ 2 gigabytes (2x1GB) PC3200 kit $204 after rebate
Nice timings. I want 2 gigabytes since I multitask a lot. OCZ is just a little more than value ram with nice timings and future overclockability.

MOTHERBOARD: ???
I was thinking about the new ASUS A8N32 since it suppose to be a rock solid board on new technology. I do not need SLi at the moment. Then I was thinking about the ASUS premium or the ABIT A8N ultra. I want a passive cooled board that is rock solid stability. I also have the problem of finding a ASUS A8N32 in stock.

HARD DRIVE: ???
I can not decide. RAID 1 sounds nice since I would never have to do any backups. Since back ups take a long time. I need around 300 gigabytes of space and I do not want to spend 500 on hard drives to run 3 300 gigabyte hard drives in a RAID 5 set up. I want fast installations of programs though. I was thinking the 400 gb WD drive. I kinda have to decide now though since I would have to uninstall Windows if I wanted to RAID later.

That is where I stand at the moment. I have Audigy 2 ZS, DVD burner, and DVD ROM. Thanks.

I'd reconsider the CPU cooler choice since the Zalman 7000 is already somewhat (arguably) outdated in cooling performance, and the fan will get louder over time and isn't that easy to replace. Heatsinks with separate fans like the SI-120 or SI-90 would be good alternatives, or you could go passive with the Scythe Ninja.

The 500W Seasonic is certainly not quieter than the 430W model, it's the other way around. The S12-430 would suit suit your system very well IMO.

There's really no point in paying extra for the A8N32 unless you're a hard core SLI enthusiast. I'd suggest more economic boards, like those you mentioned.

I'm no RAID expert but one thing I know is that pretty much any HDD on the market bigger than the WD 320GB is overpriced and very noisy. Maybe a couple of those would be a good choice? IIRC, the Caviar SE16 models are best suited for RAID. But like I said, I don't know much about RAID matters so don't take my word for it.

Oh, and running 5 Internet Explorers = WRONG :!:
The proper way of doing things is to run 0 IEs and 1 Firefox with 5 tabs. This is the absolute truth and thou shall not think it could be otherwise. ;)

CPU: great choice but I would probably go for Ninja($40) or Katana ($30)

Case: I would take the SLK3000b over sonata if looks are not important.
BTW why dont you get a P150 and sell the PSU?

PSU: you cant go wrong with that.

Video Card: 7800GT it is!

Memory: great ram for the price.

Motherboard: I have the A8N deluxe with zalman passive NB, if i was buying my pc again I would probably get the lanparty ultra D if its NB could be set passive.

Hard drives: no comments.

My first impression too.. get the P150 and recycle the NeoHE. They (apparently) only have issues with some SLI boards.. it'll work fine on a 'regular' system. P150 is WAY better.

eg. an observation.. if sold seperately (local pricing)

(Sonata II) CAN$120 - SP450 $80 = Case $40.
(P150) CAN$180 - NeoHE430 $130 = Case $50.

Update:

HARD DRIVE: I am going to get this drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136003

Just 1 drive for now. I will add a 2nd drive later that I will back up too. I have an extra 120 gig backup drive now that I can use for the meantime.

CASE: I need the extra power supply. I need it to power an Nforce 3 board and Sempron. Right now I have a an old Enermax Whisper 465 PE that is loud. I have heard of problems with the NEO 430 watt that goes beyond the Nforce 4 boards. I really do not want to sell anything. The P150 is an option, but it is also cost more and I want to be sure the NEO 430 will power up the Sempron rig.

MOTHERBOARD: I do not need Sli at the moment, but I like the idea of spending money for a rock solid MB. This is why I am torn between the A8N32 and the A8N premium. I hear the A8N32 has a better memory interface and better board overall. Upgrading a motherboard later on is asking for a windows reformat and a pain in the ass upgrade.

Going with A8N32 is probably going to delay my build by a couple of weeks since I can not find one. I can get all the other parts and still get the rebates, just not the MB. Plus A8N32 is 50 dollars more.

So right now I am at $1560 with shipping. Throw in the added cost of the P150 and A8N32 and you have around $1660. Doable, but I want to make sure that 100 is going to be dam well worth it.

You're probably right about the NeoHE. With all the bad press they'll probably have to remarket it anyway. It's a shame.

Can't talk you out of the Sonata II eh? LOL. Just curious what features you like, or what you expect from it. The SP-450 is great but cables can be a challenge (they're all too short)

I'm getting the Samsung Spinpoint P 160GB SATA hard drive, based on a head to head comparison SPCR did with the Spinpoint and the Barracuda. As for the motherboard, the A8N-SLI Premium has a passive chipset cooler installed in the place of a noisy fan, and it's got loads of features over the Deluxe version.

Both cases are good, the Sonata 2 and P150. I like the fact that the P150 comes with Accoutisc mat installed. I guess the only thing is that I want a power supply to work. I could use my Enermax 465PE for the mean time if the NEO goes out. Is the P150 going to be that much quieter than the Sonata 2

I know the premium is a good board. The only thing that is holding me back is a couple reviewers on newegg.com have said that the A8N32 has better options for memory control. For instance, some people are able to run lower timings and such on memory which leads me to believe that the A8N32 is a better board overall. Only problem is finding one before xmas. It might not happen.

Also the cost of the P150 and A8N32 is an added 90 dollar cost. I want to be sure that the cost would be worth it. My logic is the P150 might be a better option at the moment, as people have said that if you are not using SLi why buy the A8N32. What do you guys think? I am about to order.

As for the hard drive. I want the fast WD drive. It has everything and I can add another drive later. If I buy 2 drives now I think I am going to be spending around 2 grand. Also hard drive seeks actually do not bother me that much.

The motherboard can be found at both www.anitec.ca and www.ncix.com . NCIX has a longer list of parts they carry then Anitec, but Anitec tends to be cheaper.

If you are talking about the Premium it is cheaper at Newegg.com. If you are talking about the A8N32 it is out of stock at both of those places mentioned above.

I live in Greater Vancouver so I don't really factor in NewEgg in looking for low prices, since they don't ship to Canada. And both Anitec and NCIX are really close to where I live, so that's pretty much the only two places I go to when I look for computer parts.

cpu is good, but heck, why not get a ninja and slap a yate loon on it?
psu is good, but the OEM PSUs by Seasonic(SS-400HT 400w or SS-500HT if you'd like) are 80 PLUS approved, a bit more efficient than the S12 PSUs, plus the thing's a bit cheaper than the S12-430, with the same excellent fan/fan controller in them, however it does use the circuitry of the S12-500. The only thing is that the holes are lined up to be installed in a server case, but if you don't move your computer around a lot, just buy some extension cables, and just let it sit ther, it won't matter if it doesn't look all tidied up with the case. http://www.case-mod.com/store/seasonic- ... -1812.html
mobo, I'm not too sure either, but you said no sli, no noisy cooling, and I'm guessing just overall fast performance/high overclocks. For that, get an EPoX 9npa+ ultra and replace the nb cooler with a swiftech mcx159-cu which has an extremely quiet sunon fan, probably equivalent to passive since you won't hear it over the case fans, and superior cooling. If you will be overclocking your X2, it seems active cooling is needed for stability. http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/mercha ... ode=51040U The EPoX btw, has all the features and has plenty of room for the ninja and the swiftech.
For a case, I would rather recommend the P180 for around the same price if you have the room and don't care about the minor blemishes.

now when i read back, it seems you need a spare psu for another system. I would still lean toward the P180, and then get another psu, if it fits your budget, here's the calculations.
X2 3800+ninja = $370
P180 = $130
Epox+swiftech = $150
seasonic = $85
7800GT = $300 like u said
2gb ram = $200
2 300/400gb hdds = around $350??
thats around $1550. The extra psu could be a s12-330 which is $65 shipped probably. http://www.case-mod.com/store/advanced_ ... ds=s12-330
about $1600 total for everything plus the extra psu. what do u think? I heard u talking about the a8n32 but.... do u really need those fancy features?

I LIVE in Canada, and both stores are located really close to where I live, which is why I only take interest in them. And my friend had a really bad experience with Canadian Customs when he ordered his video card from the US, where the card DID get to Canada in two days like the site said it would, but Customs kept it for about a week and charged him an extra $50 for doing so.

No hijacked thread:) Anyways, I think I am going to get the premium and spend an extra 50 to get the P150. Is the P150 worth 50 dollars more over the Sonata 2? Thanks.

The extra money for the P150 is in the PSU. The case is CAN$10 difference.. more than worth it !! It's a matter of whether the NeoHE is any good to you.. or anyone else. It sure looks good on paper :)

I'm kicking myself for not doing the same. Antec will swap the NeoHE for a revised one if need be, once all the bugs are worked out (recall or warranty?). Then again.. it may work just fine.

About to click submit, but I can not decide on the CPU cooler. I have been searching around on the forums about 7700 in comparsion to other coolers. I do not want the ninja (do not want a tower). I also do not want to spend 80 dollars for a heatsink and fan. It would be nice to get this at one place, newegg. What do you guys think? XP90? Katana? I want something easy to install also. From what I read this should be better and quieter than the Zalman 7700 right?

An off the topic question, but what are you guys using to controll the rpms on the heatsinks? I have an extra fanmate.

if you really wont go with a ninja i'd go for an xp-120 with a nexus fan. You might have to order it elsewhere, but its really worth it. My xp-120 keeps my x2 4200+ running at 38 degrees under full load (2 instances of folding at home).
if newegg doesnt carry it you can always use jab-tech.com.
if you really wont compromise on getting everything from one place i'd say
get the xp-90 and a 92mm fan and buy a fanmate too.

Sorry guys could not wait. I decided to go with the Zalman. I think for my needs it should be ok. If worse comes to worse I can try it out and if I really do not like it then I can get the XP120. I just could not justify spending 70 on a heatsink and fan. Also reviews have the 7700 right next to the XP120 in performance. Christmas sprint got the best of me, but I must say this is one of the better Xmas out there:) After my gift cards I got today it ended up being around 1440. Thanks guys, happy holidays to all.

Good choice...

Post by depravedone » Sun Dec 25, 2005 10:47 pm

I personally use the Zalman, and despite talk of it being out-dated in cooling performance, my 3800 X2 runs 25C~27C under normal use. Running two instances of Prime 95 (one on each core) and I get no higher than 39C after 2 hours of the "Torture Test".

Why didn't you want the ninja?

roaf85

Post by roaf85 » Sat Dec 31, 2005 12:34 pm

Did not want the ninja because I do not want something hanging off of my motherboard. Zalman looked easy to install also. Was going to get the xp120, but I did not want to justify spending the extra 30 for the cooler and a 120mm fan. I figured that the Zalman should be good enough for now.

Antec P150 case
AMD X2 3800
Zalman 7700 Alcu hsf with AS5
ASUS A8N-SLi Premium 1.02 revision
OCZ 2 gb (1gb x 2) PC3200 2-2-3-5 timings
Gigabyte 7800 GT Zalman OEM cooler
WD 320 gb SATA 2, NCQ, 16 mb cache drive
Seasonic S-12 500 watt
Audigy 2 ZS

Anyways just build her yesterday. Took a while with wires and to be honest was going slow. If anyone wants pictures I can post them later. Booted on first try. No BIOS update nothing. The P150 is an amazing case. I set the Antec rear fan to low, and turned the Zalman fan down about half way to around 1400 rpms where the sound drops off. If anything the noisest things now are Gigabyte video card and the Antec fan. Still the computer produces just a nice quiet hum. Coming from a 747 take off I can sleep with this on.

Temps on the Zalman are around 33 C idle and around 40 C after an hour of Call of Duty in a 66 F room (room is cold). The MB stays at 38 C idle and around 41 C at load. The Gigabyte card surprising does not break 45 C at a load. This leads me to believe the extra fanmate I have lying around can be use to adjust the fan.

Any questions feel free to ask. Anyways was up late last night installing everything. No BSOD and everything works well.

There you go.. roaf85 has the best Christmas ever !!

I was just curious whether you tried the NeoHE on your SLI board. There's a SPCR forum poll going on that you might find interesting.

Anyway, looks like a fun build.. and EVERYONE likes pictures :)

I have finally pulled my self away from video games to provide answers to the questions.

Here is my power supply observation. The Seasonic S-12 500 watt right now runs at
12v: 11.97
5v: 4.9
3.3v: 3.28

compared to my friends one year old computer with
Antec Truepower 550 watt
AMD 3500 Newcastle
1 Gb of Ram
3 HDs. Two of which are WD Raptors
BFG 6800 Ultra
5 Cathode lights do not ask me why.

12v: 12.1
5v: 5.2
3.3v: 3.3

I guess my point I am trying to get at is the Seasonic is great and all, but can this thing really do SLi or overclock and hold the rails within spec? With its 80% eff. rate I would hope so.

Now on to the Neo. The P150 came single boxed by UPS and when opened there was no sign of any damage to to the case. Nothing had even come loose, yet the "Warranty Void If Removed Sticker was TORN!"

My 5 year old system does not use the 12V 4 pin connector, yet the rails have dipped as low as 11.6 on the 12V line. However after running 3dmark and some games the system is stable and does not reboot. When the NF3 board and Sempron I have coming for the old PC gets here I will provide an update.

I did not try the Neo on the new build and have no plans to. I figure it probably will not work.

Pictures will come later after I find the time to pull myself away from F.E.A.R, BF2, and everything else I was deprived out of playing because I had the old computer with the GF4 Ti4600.

I have a question though. The Antec rear fan on Low is about the only thing I will be able to hear from afar after I quiet the Gigabyte card. I was
wondering if the Nexus fan would cool better than the Antec fan on the low fan speed setting. Also does the Nexus have a low speed setting or are people controlling the speed via Speedfan or with Zalman controllers. I do not feel like buying another Fanmate.

Thanks for the info.. sorry to interrupt your gaming. LOL.

11.6v from 12.0/12.1v is still within spec (±5%). If it stayed there for any length of time.. it might be cause for concern.

Not sure about the Nexus, but I have the Antec TriCool (set on high) on a controller. Low is quiet enough for 'silent mode'. I just crank all the fans when I'm gaming. Low setting info for the Antec is 1200rpm = 39cfm @ 25dB. You should be able to compare that to the stats for any other replacement fan.

P150.. mmmmm. Happy gaming !!
