Pentium D840 Cooling

Hi,

I have an pentium d840 (dual smithfield cores, 3,2Ghz, 2x1Mb cache), will I be able to cool it somewhat silent using an Thermalright xp-90, It's going into an silverstone lascala lc03 case togheter with a geforce 7600gt and a seasonic s12 430watt.

No. The D-840 has a 130W TDP. You need a Scythe Ninja.

Can't use the ninja, as there is not enough room for it, I have about 11 cm from top of cpu to top casing.

Would the Ninja fit in the LC03? It's 15cm high. An XP-120 maybe.

An xp-120 wouldn't fit either, It hits both the south bridge heasink and the PSU. But if an xp-120 would do, wouldn' the xp-90c allso do, the reviews I have read of these two coolers shows very little performance difference.

It would work, but it would be louder.

What motherboard do you have?

The motherboard is an matx from an HP DC7600, it built by foxconn, but HP branded. I'm not looking for totally silent , I just don't want it sound to much, meaning that it shouldn't be heard over the news broadcast on normal volume.

With an XP-90 you'll be able to cool it with a decent fan, just don't expect silence. Might be worth it to go for a XP-90C just for that extra little bit of performance.

But if I ditched the silverstoen chassi, for another chassi with more height, would the ninja be the optimal way to go then ?

Probably, but I would advise moderation!

You don't HAVE to ditch the case. It can be fairly quiet. Will it be close to you, or is it an HTPC?

I would Dremel the rear to fit slower 80mm fans though.

I think an xp90c will be fine. I have an SI-120 w/ a nexus fan on my Pentium D830 and it idles at 36 degrees celcius.

So I sold the silverstone case, it was to big for my needs anyhow, So I'm thinking about getting the Aspire X Qpaq case, If I cut the crossbas under the 120mm fan there seems to be lots og space for large tower style heatsinks, any thoughts/experience with that ?

It is very hard to build a quiet PC in a SFF case like the X-Qpack. If you want quiet, do yourself a favor and use one of the cases that are popular around here. Just check the General Gallery or the Recommended list.

So

I got the qpack case, cut out the crossbar under the rear 120mm fan, installed a noctua nh-u12 with a 120mm fan on, only problem is that it will only fit so that the fan blows across the case and not front to back, any thoughts on how this will effect cooling ? Would it be wise to cut an intake hole in the side to get cool air blowing across ?
