Barton 2600+ Cooling
Just need a bit of advise on this one.
Just got an Antec P180 case and Seasonic S12 600W PSU, and my machine is now near silent! The only thing I can hear is my damn CPU fan =/
Looking for a heatsink and fan for a Barton 2600+ that is quiet as possible.
It's not overclocked, but the machine is running 24-7, so I don't mind paying that little bit extra as I'm still going to need to keep temps down at the same time as being quiet (ideally not above 50C).
I was pointed towards the Thermalright SLK-900U heatsink http://www.silentpcreview.com/article72-page1.html
Looks like what I want, but the review mentions some problems fitting on Socket A boards because of the capacitors - can anyone comment on this for me?
Am also looking for a fan to go with it!
Thanks

Aparantly the Thermalright SI-97 is one of the best Socket A coolers, Here is a picture of it on a motherboard like yours Thermaltake SI-97
It is expensive. and difficult to replace the fan.Shakey_Jake33 wrote:I've been recommended the Zalman CNPS7000B-CU, any opinions on this?
I think the ARCTIC COOLING Copper Silent 2M is a better (read less cost)option for you.
Also the Zalman may be to large at the top of the case, but I can not be sure of that.

Cheers for the reply, I'll check into that Artic Cooling one
The Antec P180 case doesn't exactly have a problem with space, but I don;t know excactly how big the Zalman is.
Another one I've been recommened (sorry to throw all these at you!) is the Thermaltake Big Typhoon thermaltake
SPCR don;t seem to have reviewed this, but it's got a pretty good write-up elsewhere. Anyone know how good this is from a sound perspective? Most reviews obviously focus on performance, but I'm sorta taking it as a given that most modern coolers should handle a stock Barton 2600+...
The Thermaltake Big Typhoon looks very similar to the SI-97 posted above, actually

Sorry, got another one! I've been doing some mad googling this afternoon... Thermaltake Sonic Tower.
http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/4in1 ... -p0071.htm
Fanless... as in, won't make a sound, right? Obviously not an overclockers choice, but seems like the best solution for a silent PC.

I've got a Tt big typhoon on a 2500+ @ 200x10/1.55v in an NF7-s 2.0.
With the fan at 12v (1300rpm) it's audible even from a distance, but it's a low pitched kind of hum that isnt too intrusive. With the fan running from 7v (~800rpm?) it's effectively inaudible from 1 meter or so.
Either way, it's performance is still better than a stock AMD cooler with the 60mm 3000rpm fan.
I'm also running an SLK-900U with a nexus 80mm @7v on a barton 2600+ @ stock clockrate/1.60v. It's performance vs noise ratio isnt quite as good as the big typhoon, but it's not too far behind. Installation is much easier though (the big typhoon can be a bit fiddly) and it doesnt put as much strain on the motherboard/socket/cpu.

I've got exactly the same board as yours. My cpu is a 2800+.
Been through the stock AMD cooler - it was ok.
Went to a Volcano 11 - horrible.
Tried a Thermalright SLK900u - my system didn't boot up cos I need the adapter thing cos my mobo was abit nf7-s v2.0
Currently using Thermalright SLK900a with 7V panaflo - it's awesome. Only concern is the weight of the heatsink, but I dont move my case around much.
Can't quite justify the move to a SI97a yet...

I've got an SI-97A on a Sempron 2400+ (undervolted to 1.375V from 1.65V) in a NF7-S v2, with a Yate Loon DS12SL-90 on it at 760rpm, and it idles at around 15C above ambient. It's never gone over 50C even after extended gaming sessions in the summer. I've even switched the fan off before and it idles at around 30C above ambient. With the fan at those revs it's quieter than a suspended Seagate 7200.7 IDE drive, even with the case open. Used to have an AC copper silent 2 and that was audible outside the case, even at minimum revs (1250rpm), though it was about a sixth of the price of the SI-97A+YL fan
If you don't want to stretch to the SI-97A, the Scythe Katana is a very very good alternative, though I've no idea how they compare. The XP-90, which was reviewed here, is similar to the SI-97, so comparing the 2 reviews may help.

well, I currently use in my P180 the Aerocool HT-101jr linky that one is cooling a Thoroughbred rev B, it's an 1800 overclocked at 2600 speed now.
Right now at *mostly* idle, it's at 39C/case 25C. Peaks at 60-65 under sustained load, I am using S2kCtl to help with temps also.
My second rig has a Sempron 2200 (Thorton core)and it generally runs at idle under 30C using the MCX462-V (linky although this is nearly impossible to find now. I found it at cooltechnica.com FYI.
Definitely remember to use some sort of software assistance in the cooling department, I am running S2kCtl on both computers right now, although it appears the NF7-S could use 8rdavcore http://www.hasw.net/8rdavcore/. More info in this thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=20903

I'd undervolt IWY, but caution against 8rdavcore - for some reason when I set it to autofsb is repeatedly crashed windows and corrupted something enough for me to have to repair windows. I don't know why but I never bothered with it again, just too much potential hassle. YMMV however, but just back up your OS partition first
I use the TT typhoon on the NF7-V2 and can confirm also what Atmo has said. In the UK this cooler is superb value for money (half the price of the Ninja. It is a very quiet and efficient cooler. It can be run passive with a bit of work, but isn't the most suited cooler for this.
However you can have a bit of fun modding it.
Modded Ninjas
The best thing on the typhoon is the fan.
As for the Sonic tower, as far as I can see the base of it is the same component used in the Typhoon so it should fit on the NF7-V2 as well. The only thing to check with this is the orientation of it. I cant think which way it would come out, but the typhoon on Socket A give you no control over this. The Abit board mounts its processor pretty close to the edge. This might be an issue.
My current project was based on a (cruddy) midi case. I had to relocate the PSU a couple of cm to accomodate the heatsink. I think this was the design of the case though at fault.
