Reversing the vga fan's wires OK? MSI 7600GT VIVO

They make noise, too.

Reversing the vga fan's wires OK? MSI 7600GT VIVO

Post by DrCR » Mon Jul 03, 2006 8:59 am

Hey, I have an MSI NX7600GT VT2D256E (like this). Unfortunatly the fan pulls the air from the outside of the case and dumps the hot air into the case - right where my harddrives are. They got hot to the touch, which really scared me. Sure hope I didn't compromise them.

I'm going to be replacing this vacuum-cleaner sounding stock cooler eventually anyway, but as a stopgap does anyone see a problem with running the miniblower from the psu - with the wires reversed so the blower runs backwards and expelles the hot air to the outside of the case?

I've never seen a computer fan that actually reversed direction when the wires were reversed. Usually the fan just stops. With an axial fan you can just flip the fan to blow the other direction. But with blower-type fans and other built-in fans, you are SOL.

I agree with Bluefront, it probably won't work.

I can't really tell from the picture... Is the fan an axial blower like this or is it a centrifugal blower like this?

I suspect it's the centrifugal blower like the second one, and even if you got it spinning in the other direction, it'd still move air the same way. :?

Bummer. Looks like I'm going to have to make do with my ghetto-mod for now. :?

Got any links to someone pairing the 7600GT with a NV4? I know the NV6 can be fitted to the 7600GT with only a little modding.

So what's your take on the MSI noise level compared to 7600GT or 7900GT stock coolers? Had chance to compare? Also how's the noise quality of that thing?

Not sure how it compares to the nvidia reference cooler

As for the noise level, let me put it this way. I'm in the process of setting up a new machine. The vga bios slows the 7600GT's fan down somewhat a few seconds after the inital full-tilt rpm at boot-up, but it didn't slow down to its quietest level (which isn't very quiet really) until I installed the nvidia driver for Win2000/XP.

During inital setup I'm temporarily running my two D12SL-12 @ 12, Scythe Mine stock @ 12v and two WesterDigital JBs as loud as they will ever sound since the case-cover is off for the time being. The 7600GT in WinOS + nvidia 84.21 in 2D is easily the loudest component...

Haven't heard a GTX in person, but as for my GT model I certainly can see any quiet/silent geek being satisfied with it, at least not longterm.

Right now I'm torn between a Condor and a VF900. Not sure how great the magnitude of difference between the stable vga memory clocks would be with either of these vga coolers. I would think the Condor would be notably inferior in this regard, unless the PCB is able to conduct a lot of thermal energy.

I ordered today a XFX 7600GT XXX together with a VF900Cu.
Will pick it up tommorow at the shop.
Evga is impossible to find in Belgian Shops, so I'm going for the XFX.
I hope that the zalman will make a big difference in noise..

Well, you can make fun of me for being an old salt of a hardware geek, but I consider evga a sub-tier manufacturer anyway..

Looking forward to how you like your VF900 setup. :)

I got my XFX 7600GT XXX, and the zalman today.
I decided to first install the XFX, just to see if it works.
(Mounting the zalman will destroy my warranty..) If it wouldn't
work, I can bring it back to the shop.
Well, first the fan runned with the standard settings of the driver
at 66%. It's noisy, but a tolerable noise. It's not like a hairdryer,
some cards do but this doesn't.

So I installed Rivatuner, and setted the fan settings for 2D on 30%,
and the 3D on 66%. And also some temp settings with Rivatuner.
This soft is really great, with all the options and free.
I didn't had to overclock the XFX as it is already factory overclocked.
Temps are good for the GPU, around 50°C idle, full 3D heavy gaming
65°C. (ambient room : 30°C, yes, it's hot for the moment..)
I am really surprised with the noise of the XFX at 30%, I just don't
hear it.
So when doing normal work, it's silent. The moment I start a game, it makes noise, but the game sound from the speakers or headphones
is louder, so the fan of the vidcard doesn't bother me.

The only thing, when making 3D animations, or rendering, it makes to much noise.
Only for this reason, I will mount the VF900, otherwise I wouldn't.
I'm gonna try out the card for about a week, before mounting the VF900.
I also noticed that it is easy to place it, or put the original back on.
So if I do it carefully the shop won't notice that the original fan was removed.
Temps with the VF900 should be about 10°C lower. So with Rivatuner
I will be able to keep it silent even at 3D 100%.
Will update this reply next week.

Compared with my former NX6600.. well the 7600GT is amazing.
I had with the NX6600 on F.E.A.R. 1280x960 medium settings
min fps 6, max fps 27, avg fps 11.
Now with the 7600GT, 1280x960 min fps 43, max fps 136, avg fps 67.

Can't wait till next week to place the VF900, but only if the card works 100%.
