Quiet Gamer Wants advice

I'm wanting to build a new system with a budget of $2k.

I plan on going AMD and Nvidia SLI.

Other than that though I was hoping for some bang for the buck tips on what to pick for a system designed for gaming that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner.

I've seen a few articles doing that and wanted the opinions here to help me in the process.

2k is alot! I would get 2x7900gt evga revision 584. Anything more is overkill really. And for processor Core duo 2. Honestly the difference between a $1200. computer and a $2000. one isnt going to be that much. Im planning on getting the cheapest conroe processor, mobo, and 2gig of value ram and throw in a 7900gt and be set for the next 2 years easy.

Are you building a whole new system? Are you reusing any compontents? (LCD for example)

And why AMD? the new Intel chips wipe the floor with AMD and they are very reasonably priced. You should be able to get an E6600 which is as fast as an FX-62 and should be air-coolable up to 4gigs.

I'm building an E6600 system with only a single vid card (7900 GT) and I'm expecting to only spend $1200 (not counting HD, DVD, or LCD)

You should be able to build a killer Conroe system for 2K

Why amd? They run cooler.

And while the new intel does beat the AMD in some aspects. It isn't gaming in which this occurs.

And yes, I'm building a whole new system. Giving my mom the old one.

I do see the point in a 2k not being much better than a 1200. Hence why I asked what is the best bang for the buck.

Intel's Core 2 Extreme & Core 2 Duo: The Empire Strikes Back

First sentence from the Final Words section of the review:

Intel's Core 2 Extreme X6800 didn't lose a single benchmark in our comparison; not a single one.

They go on to say

Compared to AMD's Athlon 64 X2 the situation gets a lot more competitive, but AMD still doesn't stand a chance. The Core 2 Extreme X6800, Core 2 Duo E6700 and E6600 were pretty consistently in the top 3 or 4 spots in each benchmark, with the E6600 offering better performance than AMD's FX-62 flagship in the vast majority of benchmarks. Another way of looking at it is that Intel's Core 2 Duo E6600 is effectively a $316 FX-62, which doesn't sound bad at all.

Considering all the information in that review Intel has hit a home run with these new cpu's and I would have no problem at all saying the Core 2 chips are the current performance/gaming leaders.

The only decent argument Ive heard for buying AMD over core duo 2 right now is that core duo 2 is new and hasnt had all the bugs ironed out. Other than that you can get a faster cooler running system based on CoDuo2 for less money then anything AMD can do right now. Im not a fan of either, so im not biased but the reviews are in Intels favor for now. And as long as core duo 2 doesnt have some issue that just hasnt been discovered yet then conroe is the way to go for any new power system.
