8800 GTX not loud at all
Ok I screwed up I connected my 8800 GTX using speedfan and forgot I had it set to 100% fan speed, duh I unistalled fanspeed and just ran it normal. Well this card is as quiet as the stock 7900 GTX fan Even after playing BF2 for a couple of hours it never went into high speed So its very very quiet I wouldn't need to put an aftermarket cooler on it The card itself barely fits in my 3700BEQ it makes it by milimeters...
No. The P150 / Solo is 2-3 cm shorter than needed for the 8800 GTX. Maybe you could support my request for a Solo XL?

Noise:
I can't hear it over my 5 Scythe SFLEX E (49CFM, 21DB) 120's and it's MUCH quieter than my previous X19 Jet Engine. I'd say it's close to Accelero levels on auto (59% fan power for me). Even when you jack up the fan, the noise doesn't produce that old annoying whine from the X19's sonic blaster...it's more of a whoosh and completely acceptable for OC fun, or Lan Parties where the noise will be up there anyway. (not that any of you would come out of your sound isolated homes)
Temps:
Ambient 25C
Idle 59C
Load 83C
That's BF2142 for an hour or so w/ 16X CSAA TMAA, 16x HQAS @ 1680x1050. Here's airflow pic for reference. There's 2 120's in the front, 2 in the rear, and one in the Tuniq. Mr. Amberbock was only visiting.

I have 8800GTS and P150. It's fairly quiet when idle, but but loud when 3D. I'd say when it idles or in 2D it's similar to tri-cool fan at low or maybe just a bit louder and with load like tri-cool full or greater, not screaming loud like some older 15K rpm SCSI disks. Bit hard to compare as other fans will kick they speed too. Have to say that my PC is no longer quiet after 8800GTS. Got a slight temperature problem too with 8800GTS, have to rethink fans and so. Average system temp is now 8 C greater.Aregnos wrote:Are you sure? That's not good... It does fit in a P180, right?
There is almost 3 cm free space behind the 8800GTS, so 8800GTX might fit in P150 (I will not say it fits, but seems close, up to you if you try), if there is no HD behind it.
EDIT: if you want, I can measure exactly how much there is space between the 8800GTS and HDD cage.

For the original question, AnandTech have just tested a bunch of production cards, for heat/power/performance etc.
Sorry if someone else beat me to posting it!

I've had my 8800gtx for a week now and can comment on it's noise levels in my P180 rig (all Nexus 120mm fans, Seasonic 650w, Scythe Infinity).
The card is silent when not under load, ie in Windows etc. For standard games that don't place too much of a strain on the card, it's inaudible.
The only time the fans speeds up is in games like Oblivion that stress the card.. that said, you need to turn HDR on and run in ultra-high resolutions to get the fan to rev up.
At it's loudest it's not an annoying sound, more like a whooshing of air.
Overall, it's NOT for a 100% silent rig, but the amazing performance from the 8800gtx series is worth a bit of pain. These cards will be very popular amongst the perofrmance/enthusiast crowd, so I expect to see some 3rd party cooling solutions pretty soon anyway.

Re: 8800 GTX not loud at all
Now I'm waiting for someone to try to undervolt a 8800GTX/GTS or find out what the voltages are for the chips, I'd make an educated guess that the GTS is probably an undervolted GTX with some pipes/memory controllers disabled. I bet it'll be possible to easily silence these guys with some creative voltage changesfalcon26 wrote:Ok I screwed up I connected my 8800 GTX using speedfan and forgot I had it set to 100% fan speed, duh I unistalled fanspeed and just ran it normal. I can confirm this as well. I have a P180 with the 3 Tricool fans set to low, a Seasonic 600w and a Scythe Mine with stock fan at full speed. I would say the most noise at idle comes from the Mine stock fan together with the rear/top fan, not the 8800GTX.t1000 wrote: The card is silent when not under load, ie in Windows etc. For standard games that don't place too much of a strain on the card, it's inaudible.

But damn, my Plextor 760SA is surprisingly loud when it spins up. The Plextor is a dissapointment, but the 800GTX is not!
Re: 8800 GTX not loud at all
GTS has 1/4th less processing power, somewhat lower clocks and narrower memory bus.merlin wrote:I'd make an educated guess that the GTS is probably an undervolted GTX with some pipes/memory controllers disabled.
So I would expect performance difference between GTS and GTX increase considerably from that measured in current DX9 applications when DX10 is used.
In fact in some games difference between them is already quite notable.
Re: 8800 GTX not loud at all
You'll see larger differences if you own a 30" LCD and are pushing games at high resolution. The GTX is worth the additional cost if you own such a system.EsaT wrote:So I would expect performance difference between GTS and GTX increase considerably from that measured in current DX9 applications when DX10 is used.

Yes, this is true. AA becomes redundant when I play at 1920x1200 on my 24" LCD. Turning AA on minimal effect -- all it seems to do is soften the textures and reduce my frame rate. Of course it's all relative to your screensize so if you have 42" screen at 1920x1200 you'll start to need AA again.Mikey wrote:According to the people i've spoken to you don't actually need as much AA (or was it AF) due to the res being so high being able to compensate for / remove the requirement for it.
please nVidia give us quad 8800GTX's
Of course! How else are they gonna have low and mid-range choices for DX10 when Vista comes out? Nvidia and ATI have at least 3 codenames each for the first DX10 generation. I can bet it'll be called 8600 and 8200 or something for nvidia. Theinquirer and some other sites have good semi-rumours on nvidia's plans.qviri wrote:Aren't they going to have a new, more reasonably sized DX10 design out early next year?
If this still interests, a distance between my Asus 8800GTS and P150 HDD cage is actually really close to 3 cm.notareal wrote: There is almost 3 cm free space behind the 8800GTS, so 8800GTX might fit in P150 (I will not say it fits, but seems close, up to you if you try), if there is no HD behind it.

I was quite buzzed about temperatures with the card. It seems that heatsink airflow has really bad design. Even the cooler is two slot model and is supposed to exhaust warm air, most if the air is actually blown inside the case from four oddly placed openings in cover of the heatsink. A little duck from those openings to empty expansion card slots helped a lot. My 8800GTS is now five slot model, lucky I had no need for PCI cards.
