140mm fan experience and where to buy?

Post by virtualrain » Sun Jul 23, 2006 2:08 am

Hi,

I'm moving to a Cooler Master Stacker 830 case which supports 140mm fans.

I've done a bit of research that I'll share but if anyone has anything to add, please let me know.

There are three companies that appear to make 140mm fans:

1. Aerocool: (http://www.aerocool.us/p-accessory/stra ... mliner.htm)

Nice looking, but suspect noise specs. Also the operating voltage is very limited (apparently they won't start under 10V). I'd be interested in knowing if after they start, if they will slow down to say 7V or 5V... anyone? It's key for me to be able to control the fans with a fan controller.

2. Yate Loon: (http://www.yateloon.com/style/content/C ... 1&id=38839)

They have three models... the SL is the silent low speed model. Apparently good voltage range and low noise. Availability? Can someone help out here? This German ebay seller has the medium and high versions: http://stores.ebay.de/silencio-777_W0QQ ... idZ2QQtZkm

3. Sharkoon: (http://www.sharkoon.com/enghtml/fans_system.htm)

They have three models as well. I have inquired about availability here in NA. CrazyPC sells the high speed version only (http://www.crazypc.com/products/fans/140mmfans.htm).

This French company has an English version of their site and they sell the products but are currently back-ordered (http://www.pc-look.com/boutik/product_i ... ixMateriel)

Does anyone know of any other sources for the Sharkoon or Yates fans?

Can anyone comment on the lowest operating voltage for these various fans?

Thanks!

I can't help you about 140 mm fans, but I can recommend Silencio777's eBay store. He answered all questions very promptly, worked with me to save on shipping, and delivered quickly.

One thing I did learn while buying fans, is that you can't use information about one of a manufacturer's products for all of its products. For example, I bought both 80 mm and 120 mm Yate Loon fans from Silencio. (both were the low speed models) The 80 mm fans are amazingly quiet. The 120 mm fans are only a little quieter than average.

Good luck with your 140 mm quest.

Hmm, the YL D12SL-12 is generally reckoned to be one of the quietest 120mm fans on the market, along with the Globalwin NCB. Do you mind if I ask what these "average" fans are that you are comparing them with? Also is this at 12V, 7V, 5V?

To be fair to the YL 120, I was comparing it to 80 mm fans from Memorex and an Arctic Cooling lighted running at the same voltage (5 and 12 volts). I know that this isn't an apples to apples comparison, but I doubt anyone would claim either of those fans are quiet. Perhaps a better way of stating it would to have compared the YL 80 against the YL 120. The INCREASE in noise of the 120 compared to the YL 80 (or any other 80) was more than I expected.

I would gladly recommend the YL120. It's a good fan. But if you want the next level of quiet, the Silencio special Pabst 120 is clearly better, at least in the example that I have.

Aerocool Streamliner thread

If the 140mm YL is anything like the D12SL-12, it will start at 5V and have very low noise. I never heard of the Sharkoon 14cm before. Silencio has over 4000 +ve feedback, 0 -ve, that should tell you what a good seller he is.

You may not even need a 14cm fan, depends on how hot your components run.

YL D14SM-12, which is stated to be manufactured by Antec (I don't think so!). The D14SL-12 is the model most SPCR folk would be interested in, but I don't know of a source in the US of A. :(

Hmm. The heading sez "M", the specifications say "L". You paze yer money and you takes yer chances... :D

SVC.com has 140 mm Aerocool.

A 600 rpm ,140 mm would be sweet and a lot of places carry Evercool.

I think a real good spot for a big exhaust is the floor. Glue or screw on "feet " of 2x2" wood for clearance-maybe semi enclose it as a base, with strips of wood on the front and sides so the air vents to the rear.

Many of todays CPU's can operate passive with a big heatsink. A 140 at 600-800 rpm,and a low speed fan in the PSU should provide ample airflow for most rigs.

I suspect a Sempron could run passive with ALL the venting via a psu with a 140 mm fan at about 1000 rpm, maybe less.
You hear claims of "my Sempron is running at 30C. Well, great, but that tells me you have too many fans or too much RPM.

I bought an Aerocool Streamliner 140mm a while ago and was very disappointed.

Compared to a Nexus 120mm, it moved less air and was noisier. Double whammy. :(

Hi,

I'm also using the AeroCool Sreamliner, but my experience is different.

It moves slightly less air than many 120mm fans - true: but it runs at 1000 rpm max, and produces much less niose.

Mine start at below 4V and will run smoothly down to about 470 rpm.

I get the impression that they are less sensitive to back pressure than more conventional fans with fewer/larger blades. I'm using them on the CPU cooler where the "free air" CFM is an almost irrelevant figure - the resistance to airlow through a Cooler maens you seldom get over 20CFM whatever fan you use.

It should, and does, in my experience anyway. My 140mm "SL" yate loon pushes enough air at 900rpm to cool my entire system (see sig), excluding the PSU which has a fresh air duct.

Where did you get the 140mm SL from?

I have the 140mm SM and think it's a bit on the noisy side.

Thanks.

I have a Silencio-edition D14SL-12, runs fine at 6V.

Further to above comment, all the fans in the P180 are now at 7v and the D14SM is ok in the psu chamber (attached with some Blu Tack)
