How did you make the duct? Do you have any pics?notareal wrote: I was quite buzzed about temperatures with the card. It seems that heatsink airflow has really bad design. Even the cooler is two slot model and is supposed to exhaust warm air, most if the air is actually blown inside the case from four oddly placed openings in cover of the heatsink. A little duck from those openings to empty expansion card slots helped a lot. My 8800GTS is now five slot model, lucky I had no need for PCI cards.
Sorry no pics, but spotted quite similar solution. My duct is a bit larger, covers all empty slots and has no external fan.tima wrote:How did you make the duct? Not bad. I do have one empty slot below the card, so something like that might work. Is there a recommended tape for this sort of thing? I might also try a slot cooler to actively exhaust the air.notareal wrote: Sorry no pics, but spotted quite similar solution. My duct is a bit larger, covers all empty slots and has no external fan.
Electrical tape is fine, but I did not use any tape. I did attach mine with two screw to pci-card holders.tima wrote:Not bad. I have understood that with rivatuner you can. Anyway when I was testing sound levels of the fan with my duck, I used rivatuner in manual mode and it worked fine. I did leave controlling the fan for 8800 gts job as using a exhaust duck helped a lot with temp and fan speed ramps up now only when it really needs.peterj wrote:Can you control the fan speed of a 8800 gts/gtx? Rivatuner, Expert tool or so.
Does anyone have their 8800 in an inverted case design. As in the fan ends up on the top side of the card?
I wanted an 8800 but I just bought an HIS X1950 because of the silent cooling, but when its mounted upside down, there is quite an annoying fan noise, like the fan is constantly catching or grinding on something. I know the cooler is made by Arctic cooling and I found this info about one of their other coolers:
"The impeller will sit on the bearing in case of using the cooler top side up what doesn't lower the service life but can increases the noise level."
So my question is, will this be the case with any fan or does it depend on the type of bearing used? If anyone has the 8800 upside down, can you let me know how it sounds. Thanks.

February 12th and $299, to be exact.CA_Steve wrote:Rumor is February for a 320MB version of the GTS for $300.qviri wrote:Aren't they going to have a new, more reasonably sized DX10 design out early next year?

Unless retail prices are going to be much lower than 300 I don't see any reason buying it over 640Mb GTS that go for $365 after MIR on newegg right now.Janzki wrote:February 12th and $299, to be exact.CA_Steve wrote:Rumor is February for a 320MB version of the GTS for $300.qviri wrote:Aren't they going to have a new, more reasonably sized DX10 design out early next year?
What I really want is for ATI to bring their 600 series chips which should bring some competition and maybe force nVidia to lower their prices. Couple of years back MSRP on 6800GT was $400, 12-16 months later you could buy 7900GT which is a much better card for 'only' $300.
