I'm actually enjoying this a lot, finally some variety and change. March started off freezing at -20*C and then went to over 20*C. (Seeing ice on a mildly shaded small lake is certainly interesting when you're wearing a tshirt and wish you were wearing shorts.) Now April's back to -5*C and snowing, occasionally to the point of a whiteout. Fun

If it is global warming, then there is no "local cooling" (the phrase should be "regional cooling"). The only way that regional cooling can exist is if the observed warming trend that has been cited since the global freezing scare of the 1970s is not truly global, which is what we have been seeing.jaganath wrote:Just as a PS, global warming doesn't rule out local cooling, for ex. in Antarctica.ronrem wrote:Here's to our brave Canadian Neighbors who appear to be reversing the Global Warming trends
whatever, you can nitpick about semantics all you like. The atmosphere is not a homogenous system so it would be foolish to expect all of it to behave in exactly the same way at exactly the same time. Just as when a gas warms up some of the particles will be warmer than the average and some will be cooler, so some places are cooler and some warmer than the average, but the average has increased. If you prefer not to call that global warming then so be it, but it doesn't make it any the less so.
it is no longer semantics because 'global warming' now is a LOADED phrase with the implication that it is ALL MAN-MADE via industrialisation
It is now linked with the attempt to put curbs and penalties on industrialisation and has the political agenda of slowing down the growth of developing nations who are in the throes of industrialisation/modernisation
the changes in weather could be caused by anything including SOLAR ACTIVITY, the solar system travelling through the cosmos, and natural earth cyclical changes.
This is why even on Mars, the 'weather' there have been shown to have changed significantly over the decades but as far as i can see... there is no sign of industrialisation on that planet.

We had 10 cm scheduled for overnight, they just upgraded this to 10 mm of rain - so maybe it won't snow lots in Montreal either.Mari0-Br0s wrote:tomorrow there's another snow storm coming, this is just what I've seen on the news!!!
10 cm of snow on April 12th sure would have been interesting, though...

Mars is not a valid comparison system. Unlike earth Mars has a very weak magnetic field. This is very important to protect the planet from solar winds and solar radiation. Once the magnetic field is gone the atmosphere is no longer protected and is literally blown into space. This is why there is no oxygen on mars. The only atmosphere they have is very thin and made up of mostly carbon dioxide.Runn3r wrote: the changes in weather could be caused by anything including SOLAR ACTIVITY, the solar system travelling through the cosmos, and natural earth cyclical changes.

Back to the OP's main topic.
One thing I cant stand is how people take local weather extremes and state, "Why are we getting ice and snow in April? Where is global warming?", or, "Localized record high temps, global warming is out of control."
These people don't understand how the whole earth's atmosphere or climate work.
Weather is not constant, nor does it follow normalities or trends. Weather is random, and does not represent the entire earth's climate.
