8800 Ultra to have new cooler

Post by Tzupy » Tue Apr 24, 2007 9:29 am

Well, I don't have a picture of this new cooler, but if it will be as good as the 7800 GTX 512 one (that is used on the 7900 GTX) then it could be a good stock cooler for the future 8900 GTX. When someone sees this new cooler, please post about it here.

Well, here it is: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39197
I wouldn't call it 'new', only 'improved'. IMO for such power hungry cards a triple-slot cooler is needed, with exhaust through two PCI slots.

they say 8800 ulltra is just bit voltmodded version of GTX. So basicly anyone can create Ultra from their GTX. If that is true, then Ultra is pretty useless card. I wonder if Nvidia rushed it due ati R600?

Yes.

they did.

It is cherry picked and overclocked. the gtx is a hot card, I cant imagine how hot this card will be. ew. This is the polar opposite of spcr standards in any stretch of the silent imagination.

Here are the specifications of the Geforce 8800GTX and Geforce 8800 Ultra. The Geforce 8800 Ultra is just an overclocked version of the 8800GTX.

And some say nVidia will put nice 863$ price tag on 8800Ultra. And according some news, the new cooler is not designated for cooler operation but for quieter. Making that even hotter than GTX if news are true.

Its like putting Sauna Heater inside case...

I'd rather wait for 8900 series which is supposed to make debut in July.

Sparkle put the Macs cooler (already used on 8800 GTX) on their Calibre (overclocked) version of 8800 Ultra: http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4943
AFAIK it's noisier than stock, but cools better. IMO on the overclocked 8800 Ultra there won't be enough temps difference to allow for lower fan speed.
Update: if you want to buy an 8800 Ultra with the stock cooler, here is a link (actually preorder not buy):

it's noisier than stock
Why do you think so?

The cooling system is identical.

Well, I also saw another review, and it said it's noisier, not much though: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getart ... rticID=561
Even if the Macs cooled better - and quieter - than the stock cooler at 100%, that was on a 8800 GTS 320, overclocked by 15%.
It remains to be measured how well (noisewise) the Macs cooler copes with the extra heat of an overclocked 8800 Ultra.

I doubt there will be an 8900. With no pressure from ATI to make a move, nVidia can just push on developing a GeForce 9, and be able to bring out a killer in the winter (if ATI ever releases the x2900XTX).

Oh, there will be a 8900, nVidia are always happy to make more money. The 8800 chip at 90 nm is huge, by shrinking the process to 80 and then 65 nm they'll be able to make more of them. What will happen if AMD can't deliver top performance is that nVidia will go for lower clocks (relatively speaking), higher yields at those clocks, also lower power consumption. It took a long time to hand design the 8800 stream processors, nVidia is going to use that design for some time. They might have to make adjustments to the design only if the shrink to 80 nm doesn't go well.
