Post by morten » Fri Apr 20, 2007 11:04 am

Hi all.
I am in need of a new harddisk and have heard that the samsung spinpoint
p series sp2504c sata is a very silent one. Have you lot heard of one there is more silent upto the sice of 250 gb. I am also in need of a dvd drive that must be as silent as posible, it is to be used in a home bild mediacenter.
I hope you can help me with these items mostly the dvd drive.

Morten.

Just thought I'd let you know of my experiences as I've just finished off designing a media centre pc today (haven't tried the bits yet). Those Samsung hard drives are supposed to be very quiet but I've just ordered a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 which is supposed to be about the quietest and fastest, and at £50 for 320gb the price is right too.

As for DVD drives, all Samsung and Pioneer drives are supposed to be very quiet. I've ordered a Samsung myself today.

Heads up, there are lots of horror stories about the 7200.10 in this forum, search function will find them, certainly not the quietest 3.5", not even close.

Thanks santahul for the info about the dvd-drives, and many thanks to jaganath for the heads up about the 7200.10.

What cpu would you use to your media centre, i am thinking about an amd athlon 3500+ clockspeed 2200 for my 939 socket motherboard.

My Samsung HD321KJ is noticeably quieter and cooler running then the Samsung SP2004C, which was already very quiet and cool. Both are huge improvements over the previous Seagate 7200.7.

I second that 7200.10 are HORRIBLE!

The idle sound of one of those babies is about twice as high as my three Spinpoint P120, mounted in a P180 chassis. The seek noise is also comparable to a computer from last century. It is easily the noisiest hard drive I've heard recently.

I personally don't mind my 7200.10 - perhaps I've learned to settle - but given my usual pickyness I doubt that's it. There's much worse. Although it's probably sample variance.

Hi,

The WDC 5000KS oughtta be really quiet, right? So I shouldn't ought to hear it when sitting 1 metre away from the computer, right? I've got a CM Centurion 5 with a lot of holes, so to speak (you probably all know what I mean, but I don't know what it's called in English), in the front.

I have been looking at samsung 161hj and it is very quiet accordenly to samsung themselves. The bigest sice is however 160gb. Does anyone know this harddisk, and what is your opinion of it.

Just started testing 2 Samsung S166 HD161HJ drives. First impressions are excellent : they vibrate a lot less than the HD501LJ (of which I own eight, all in Scythe Quiet Drives); idle and seek noises seem to be 1~2 db/A lower, too. I'll be using them as boot drives.

Very good info about the vibration and noice. I use the silentmaxx hd-silencer.Is there much difference between them.

I'm using a Silentmaxx HD-Silencer on another PC and had been comparing it to the Scythe Quiet Drive and the Nexus Drive-a-Way; the Silentmaxx is slightly less effective in reducing noise but slightly better at dissipating heat, and it's smaller so it's easier to put on foam in case you don't want to hard-fix it to the tower (this is useful when used with a hard drive that vibrates a lot). With the HD161HJ the Silentmaxx HD-Silencer will do a very good job, there's no need to replace it by a Scythe Quiet Drive.

Thanks Alfred for your reply, but what is this " put on foam ". I have never heard of it before. Is there a site on the net where i can read about it. I have some older and noicy drives that aparently could need it.

Newegg just priced the silent HD501LJ at $120 with free shipping. I own one of these drives and it is almost inaudible suspended in an Antec Solo. The customer reviews at Newegg for this model are extremely high.

Sorry I know my english isn't that much precise sometimes, to say the least :) I simply meant : removing the four lateral metallic plates on the Scythe Quiet Drive (the ones that allow you to fix the enclosure in a 5.25" slot) in order to reduce the enclosure's width, then simply lay down the Scythe on some deep foam and not fixing it; therefore it won't transmit any residual vibration to the tower.
