ATI HD 2600 and HD 2400

ATI HD 2600 and HD 2400
HD 2600 - TDP 45 W
HD 2400 - TDP 25 W
Both on 65nm processes. Idle power may be in the single digits. Full HD video encoding/decoding acceleration...
I think that despite the 2900's issues, these cards may be the biggest 'cool and quiet VGA' development in a while when they are finally out.

yeah, ati drivers with f000king overscan which cant be turned off are *(^*&%*. for now i have to stick with gf6600 (new build, something had to be very cheap), but in a few months, when more cards will be on the market (june is release month for 2400 and 2600) i will decide what to buy. but 45W for 2600 is really looking good!.

from what i read, the 2x00 line has pwm fans as fairly standard.
the passive card with full hd is awesome
thats insane wattage numbers.
RELEASE THE 2900 IN THAT ALREADY !!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
65nm and new process would be such a win for the 2900.
any 2600 benchies?
That 2600 could EASILY be passive. That is some super low wattage... wow...

Well, we weren't allowed to toss in our own media, and the only content being shown was HD or recorded renderings (the new Ruby demo), and I don't have any of these cards yet (nor should anyone, and the guys at DailyTech have been gambling with their credibility on this one; they got into huge shit by breaking NDA while they were attending the conference and did some FUD-dealing after the fact) so I can only tell you what AMD told us:
1. HD content was running smooth like butter. I'm pretty sure what I saw verifies this. There were two HD movies shown, and I think they were Casino Royale and MI:2, which, IIRC, are both H.264; I know Serenity is VC-1 but if there was an example of VC-1 performance it wasn't on while I was in the display area.
2. SD content was near-perfect. They've said this before, but given the HD performance I'm inclined to believe them.
Both of these use 3:2 pulldown, and what I saw was the best yet, if not the best possible.
3a. No comment regarding editing or capturing, so reverse telecine for those purposes was nil. There's a lot going on between engineering and legislature for capture, and I don't think they want to make any mistakes publicly. One specific "no comment" was about reviving the All-in-Wonder, so you know, cross your fingers.
3b. As far as outputting video by reverse-telecine, I think that's how you get a perfect HQV score, so they must be pretty good at it. It's what I'm most interested in seeing because it's so damn easy to spot, and it seems like everyone screws it up.

Some general info about HD 2400, 2600 cards here.
http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/431/2/
Only HD 2400 PRO seems to become available as a passive card yet.
Edit: This was May 19, not so any more.
Check this thread about a passive HD 2600 XT.

Looks like Sapphire will have a passively cooled HD2600 XT Ultimate in two memory sizes, 256MB and 512MB, as soon as July (article link w/ pics)Alex wrote:Only HD 2400 PRO seems to become available as a passive card yet.
Yes things have changed to the better since May 19.Looks like Sapphire will have a passively cooled HD2600 XT Ultimate in two memory sizes, 256MB and 512MB, as soon as July (article link w/ pics)Alex wrote:

I have edited my previous post for correctness to future thread readers.

You may also be interested in MSI's own offerings, which will be showcased this week at Computex 2007 in Taiwan. HotHardware has an early preview of the RX2600 Geminium (dual GPU, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 800MHz core clock speed and 1400MHz memory speed) and RX2600XT Diamond (256MB of DDR4 RAM, core clock speed of 800MHz and 2200MHz memory speed). It looks as if both cards are passively cooled as well (image links below):
RX2600 Geminium
RX2600XT Diamond
Not as pretty as Sapphire's or ATI's reference design, but this may be inconsequential if your case doesn't have a window.

Gigabyte and PowerColor also had passively-cooled offerings of their own on display at Computex 2007 (information courtesy of HardwareZone).
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2400 PRO
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2400 XT
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2600 XT
PowerColor Radeon HD 2400 Pro
PowerColor Radeon HD 2600 Pro
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2400 PRO
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2400 XT
Gigabyte Radeon HD 2600 XT
PowerColor Radeon HD 2400 Pro
PowerColor Radeon HD 2600 Pro
I sure would have liked to put a big fan on the cooler of the Powercolor HD 2600 card but I can't wait much longer for it.
Now availability is said to be beginning of July but I wonder if it might be September (sigh).
You should expect the HD 2600 cards to be slower than 8600GTS cards (rather on par with 8600GT?). Edit: [Reported to be slightly slower than 8600 GTS.]

That's probably a reason why dual HD 2600 cards are showing up. But these crossfire (dual) cards are not double HD 2600 performance right?
Or will they be high performance for high resolution screens considering they shall have 512 MB?
Anyway these cards are a nightmare for any silent oriented soul.
Also
"Be aware, though, that HD 2900 XT itself does not feature UVD, this is specific to 2600 and 2400,
so the levels of CPU utilization you see should be somewhat similar to the previous generation."
Are ATI/AMD liars or what do you think?

Edit: [Apparently AMD clarified this already in 11 of June.

If this will be true then goodbye ATI/AMD for a while and we all know what gamers will put on Santas list.

The Tech Report - AMD ships Radeon HD 2400, HD 2600 to board makers:
The Tech Report - MSI introduces notebook with turbo button:According to MSI, the 2600 XT and 2600 Pro will be slightly slower and significantly cheaper than Nvidia's GeForce 8600 GTS and GeForce 8600 GT, respectively.
MSI's graphics showcase featured a dual-Radeon HD 2600 XT CrossFire setup squeezed onto a single (and rather large) board. But don't expect to see this product in stores. MSI says performance is lackluster and that it's "not a good solution."
This surely clarifies everything.HueyCobra wrote: The Tech Report - AMD ships Radeon HD 2400, HD 2600 to board makers:The Tech Report - MSI introduces notebook with turbo button:According to MSI, the 2600 XT and 2600 Pro will be slightly slower and significantly cheaper than Nvidia's GeForce 8600 GTS and GeForce 8600 GT, respectively.MSI's graphics showcase featured a dual-Radeon HD 2600 XT CrossFire setup squeezed onto a single (and rather large) board. According to AMD (from link in the first link above).
OK, beginning of July is true then (=I will wait).Graphics cards based on these processors are expected to be available at online retailers within a few weeks from board customers.
Thank you HueyCobra.

I don't think I can wait until mid August (=bad news). Here's the Radeon (read PowerColor) HD 2600 Pro SCS3 model. Again, both should be available in mid-August.
BCCHardware has a Radeon HD 2600 XT Preview.
The RV630XT - Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB shows some promise as a mid-range card. It offers full DX10 support without sucking too much power. It will be interesting to see how it performs with some eye-candy turned on at mid - to - high resolutions.
A video-decoding comparison of the 2600 XT and 8600 GTS should be interesting.
