Samsung F1 series hard drives w/1TB model

Post by rpsgc » Mon Jun 11, 2007 2:12 pm

(...)

Samsung’s SpinPoint F1 hard disk drives not only bring Samsung into the club of 1TB HDD suppliers, but also mark the company’s leadership in magnetic media technologies. SpinPoint F1 1TB uses just three 334GB platters, a record in both areal density as well as platter capacity. By contrast, 1TB drives from Hitachi and Seagate use five 200GB and four 250GB platters, respectively.

The SpinPoint F1 1TB hard disk drives are equipped with 7200rpm motors, 16MB or 32MB cache (depending on the model) and are designed for Serial ATA-300 interface with native command queuing. The manufacturer declares 8.9ms average read seek time and 4.17ms average latency. The new drives are equipped with a set of Samsung’s proprietary technologies that lower acoustics levels and improve performance. Besides 1TB hard drives, SpinPoint F1 family also includes 320GB, 500GB and 750GB models.

(...)

Samsung SpinPoint F1 drives are now shipping to the company’s customers. Suggested retail price is unclear.

damn, and to think I just bought a second T166.

these things are due to release here in germany tomorrow at around 220€ (300$), which is a nice price compared to the 300€ (400$) price tag the hitachis have...

€230 for 1 TB is less than what you have to pay for a Hitachi. Here are the 750 GB models.

At last some competition for Hitachi! Hopefully that'll see them drop below £200 inc. in short order !

little offtopic, but it's all because I'm realy intrested in these drives:

can someone tell me how relieable samsung drives are?

many years ago, when first of samsung drives arrived (I think they were 80GB), I had very bed experiance with them - half of them I had to replace in first year of usage. warranty was ok, but I was dissapointed about reliability.

since then, I've never used samsung drive.

have situation changed during the time?

220 euros?

*does some maths*

That's almost cheaper than two 500GB drives :D

If I can get this bonus I've been trying to arrange at work, I'll buy one ;)

Im eagerly waiting reviews on this drive! Although I'll bet it will retail here for 300€, like the hitachi at 365€. :/ With 3 brands doing 1TB now, when will WD come up with one?

Wow. 3 times 334GB. That's 14GB more than I have now on a single platter, times three. I'm still having trouble believing it ;)

Release date sometime during July according to what I read on another board, no idea if that's true.

So all I've been able to find so far is that the MSRP is expected to be $399 for the 1TB model, at least one press release says its already shipping, but I can't find it anywhere. I can't find anything about the single platter model, which is what I would be most interested in. Has anyone else found any pricing or online retailers for any of the drives in this new lineup?

I Google'd the search term "Samsung 1000gb" and came up with a few hits. This place in Germany appears to be selling it (at least several customers have reviewed it, so I think they are selling it): http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/Sams ... 60325.html

All the other places that came up as hits from the search had the drive listed as Not Available or Pre-Order, but a few listed the delivery date as 7/18 or 7/19/07, which pretty much means any day now...

Let's hope for a release soon. I'm ready to take my chances with a bit noisier drive if that happens to become the truth just to get some extra performance.

Does anyone know if HD500IJ is going to have 2 platters/3 heads (that is if it will be effectively using only 1.5 platters) or if it's going to be using 2 platters/4 heads and will be shortstroked to bring capacity down to 500GB?

That's a good question. The performance of a short-stroke drive would have the potential to be higher than any of the full-stroke varients since you could restrict it only the highest throughput region of the drive. That would be great for any applications that need maximum sustained throughput.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. 250GB platter Seagates top out at almost 100MB/s. A 333GB platter HD500IJ short stroked from 666GB down to 500GB is going to be a performance winner while providing more than enough storage for home use.
