second harddrive - WD or Seagate

Post by dentaku » Fri Jun 15, 2007 5:22 am

I already have a 320GB SATA Western Digital AAKS drive that has XP on it but I'd like to put Vista on it and get another drive for dual booting into XP.
I like the Western Digital, it doesn't whine at all and it's the high pitched sounds that annoy me.
I have 2 IDE seagates but I've never owned an SATA model before.

Which one of these 2 80GB drives would you people recomend?
They're exactly the same price +$5 shipping.

Can't you just put 2 system partitions and 1 shared data partition on the current drive?

Hello,

If the Western Digital has fluid bearings, then I think I would get that one -- and definitely get it if it is an SE16. Which generation is the Seagate? (7200.10, 7200.9...anything newer than a 7200.7 would not be ideal.)

I have a 250 GB 7200.7 and it is incredibly loud. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I've never understood why people like that model line.

Hello,

You're right -- the 7200.7 is louder than the best Samsung and Western Digital, and certainly louder than the previous gen Seagates. But, they are quieter than the 7200.8, .9, etc.

Really? What's up with all the people running around on Newegg and the like claiming that the 7200.9 is super quiet? My 7200.7 must be abnormally loud.
