Time to upgrade?

Post by rpc180 » Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:05 pm

Long time member at SPCR, so glad to see its still alive and well when I come and decide to upgrade - loved this site when I was first modifying for a quiet system in 2003.

I was thinking purchasing the following come January '08:
Antec Solo
Seasonic S12 II 330
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Intel E6550
Thermalright Ultra-120
G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-800
WD Scorpio 120GB SATA x 2 (might go with 3.5" WD AAKS's instead...)
Passive ATI 3850 w/ 256mb
Nexus Fans tied to some Fan Speed Controller

I like to play RTS games - and the one that I've been wanting to get my hands on is World in Conflict - which my current system won't play. Also, the lack of native MB SATA and USB 2.0 support (cameras, etc) is killing me! Rather than upgrade I figure after 5 years its time to buy new.

For kicks, this is what I still have (and built in 2003) after finding this site, the thread for it was hosted on the last page of the gallery ( - wow, historic, photos aren't hosted on the original site anymore though):
P4 2.2 Northwood
MSI 845 Ultra MB w/ Zalman NB cooler
Zalman AlCu "Flower" Cooler
ATI 8500 with the Zalman HP Sandwich cooler
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB x 2
Antec PSU 350W PSU modded with a Panaflo fan
A host of Panasonic Panaflo fans in various sizes
A FrozenCPU fancontroller switch

Not too many passive options yet, but I figure in January a few of versions of the new ATI 3850's will show up. Or at least the Sapphire passive version will be available.
