Life of hot horizontal sleeve bearing?

Post by Derek Baker » Sun Oct 05, 2008 9:11 am

Recently put an S1 Rev 2 on my HD 4870. Tied a Nexus 120 to it.

Since read warnings about horizontal and hot sleeve bearings.

What would be a reasonable expectation of life for the fan - it's not only horizontal but on a card that throws out a prodigious amount of heat when under load?

Thanks.

You'll hear the fan go bad and watch temps skyrocket when it goes bad. You will probably be long past that video card and system before that fan goes bad. Don't worry about it, basically.

Even if I keep it as long as my last graphics card - 4 years?

for 4-5yr lifespan, better to get Scythe S-Flex, FD bearing and cheap for such durability.

But wait until you can hear the difference before buying a new fan. Depending on how many hours a day you use the PC you may have years to go before you need to get the SFlex or whatever the better fan in a few years will be.

You can always try the fan of your choice, they aren't that expensive. If it fails after 2 years, you just buy another one ;)
