They make noise, too.

Ant6n: How much power does it use with no graphics card installed?

Has anyone tested yet how big is the power consumption difference with using pci-e v1.X and pci-e v2.0 (configurable from motherboard bios?).

If I wanted to replace the 4770's heatsink with a trimmed S1, what 4770 should I buy? As I understand it, the PCB's vary from reference, so how would I know which one I should get? Thanks in advance.

so far, the retail one is the "real version" the other version, the " media version" is pure BS. basically, there all the same shit. the media version has more shit, bullshit. buy the cheapest, make sure it works first, then slap a trimmed s1 rev 2, and by happy. your temps should look like this

unless you botch the whole thing (cutting 2 little, 2 much or like i did flopping at my first try)

My BIOS doesn't seem to have that option. :(

ZM-RHS1

Post by Sydneyboi » Tue Jun 02, 2009 1:09 am

Does anyone know if the ZM-RHS1 fits on the 4770?
Tossing up whether to get a sapphire 4770 or the gigabye zalman 4850 which is the same price,
from reading this thread there are not many options for cooling the 4770.

I don't know if anyone has done this, or could do this, but I'm curious about total system power draw at idle with the 4770 vs a 3870. I'd be curious also to see how reduction in RAM clocks change things.

MSI have a different PCB layout at Computex, smaller cards with the GPU where it should be.

Thank you for the link, that looks really nice. I would like that cyclone cooler variant (if it's not too expensive).

Now, if only they could get these cards on the actual market... *twiddles thumbs impatiently*

Sapphire was showing off their Ultimate and Vapor-X version of the 4770 too.

TSMCs low-yielding fab isn't just making it hard to find 4770s, it is also delaying new cards by both AMD and nVidia that are based on the 40nm fab.

heh, I know, I actually posted in that thread in response, I'm just curious for a direct comparison, because I have an HD3870, and I'm interested what the difference in idle power consumption will be.

Scythe VGA Heatsinks
A very useful set to have around. Cools VRMs, Ram, whatever you want. And you can stick the rest on the sides of your suspended HDD's^^

Eh, they are all the same till the non-reference models come out. I think at least gigabyte and sapphire will have passive models.

R4770-MD512/D3 is a 4770 with GDDR3 memory according to the following page.

Hi Silo, I am seriously considering getting this cooler and ram heatsinks. Have you run the ati tool program to check for artifacts for atleast a few hours?

I am going to try strapping 120mm fan with cable ties to the cards standard heatsink fan, and disconnect the original fan on the card. I think that it might work ok.

1. no. petercrab, i like to test my videocards with games, ( crysis, ridick, etc) Even with the fan at 5v, the s1 crushes the stock cooler by a huge margin, both idle and load.

( edit 1 hr of crysis > 875 core 1000 memory =42C > rivatuner osd)

2. No. I really dont think thats a good idea. the original cooler dsnt have much mass,in order to work it needs that noisy cooler moving air, a bigger fan at 5v is not going to provide enough airflow > reasonable noise @ temps. + you have to do something about the memory and mosfets.

so if you want a silent 4770 > s1 rev2 or wait for a non reference version
( careful, some non reference vers are even shitier that the orig vers!) and slap a better cooler.

@baconandeggs, the XFX cooler is the same as the cooler they sent out to reviewers...but lacking the heatpipes. It performs like shit, and is louder than the retail cooler.

I bought the XFX version with that castrated cooler only coz I got it cheap and it has the 4-connector fan cable. I bought a burnt Sapphire X1950XTX and modded that cooler to fit. I now feed it with 1.25v and get 1GHz/1.2GHZ with 40C idle and 50C load. It is dead quiet, but I still want to downclock that gddr5 memory when idle...

If you can, get that Sapphire cooler...it is all copper and is designed to cool a 120W card. It weighs in at 500g or something..

Needles to say, it can handle a voltmodded 4770 without a sweat.

My experience with the retail cooler is that it does indeed run quiet (33% at idle, ~44% at 70c) but I highly doubt it is all copper. It has a copper color but the feel of it is a lot different from other copper heatsinks I've handled and it also feels too light to be copper. The retail cooler doesn't even feel like metal although it probably is some sort of metal mixture.

With that said, I have no complaints. Unless you're increasing the voltage, the cooler is more than adequate for stock speeds. temps in my p182: 40c idle, 70c load (furmark) out of the box (74f room temp). no tweaks to voltage, clock. or fan speeds.

Clint, my lame oc sometimes works, and sometimes it doesn't (hangs)
Im using rivaT + display drivers, no ccc and stock volts.

With that Asus SmartDoc utility, is it possible to revert back to my stock clocks @ 2d voltages? (asus bios has higher 2d vcore ?)

btw...

great cooler @ OC @_@!

The Asus TOP bios is more stable. The freezes and hangs was common with original bios for me too. I would flash the card regardless if you want to raise voltage. You can run the card on stock volts with the Asus bios as well. With the Asus bios you get a better range in CCC as well, no need for Rivatuner. The slides goes all the way up to 1GHz/1200MHz.

Did a 3D06 run with CPU@ 3.5GHz, GPU@ 1GHz and GDDR5@ 1.2GHz:

I must say that cooler is a piece of art, weighs in at a whopping 500g or so...all copper. They simply don't make them heatsinks that good anymore.;)
When feeded with 1.25v I get 40C idle and 50C load.:D ...and not even close to the noise as the stock coolers generates...

If I run the card unmodded the fan stays on lowest speed all the time, never exceeds 65C...and inaudible :D
