Advice on my new I5 setup

Post by karkee » Sat Nov 07, 2009 5:41 am

Hello im kinda new on the forums,

Im building a new gaming rig but still have some doubts about what CPU cooler + fan, casefans. What I want to achieve is a quiet gaming system with still nice performance.

My setup: I5-750 (wont overclock)
2x2gb corsair kit
Asus P7P55D Pro
Asus ATI 5850
P183

So like I said I can't decide what CPU cooler I will go for.

The ones I was looking at : TRUE revC , megahalem and the new noctua SE. All of these compatible with 1156 socket.

The next thing I can't decide is what fan I will use for it. I was thinking about either a slipstream 500RPM or the 800RPM version(can undervolt still), also been thinking alot about going with my old trusty nexus and run it at 5/7v. Any advice would be great, maybi even noctua or NB?

Casefans:
Same here I was thinking of also using 2x 500/800 scythe slipstreams. But then again im open for more advice (noctua,nb,nexus)

Btw for anyone thinking about buying the 5850 is great ;)

Thx

i read somewhere that scythe is supposed to be coming out with a socket 1156 bracket for the mugen-2, which would make it an easy decision, provided that it fits your mb:

look at the 4-star rating

Maybe try the Megahalems with two Nexus fans at 5V to 7V in push/pull?

The SPCR review of the Mugen 2 found this works really well, so it should also work for other heatsinks.

Yea going to go with megahalems and try 1/2 fans at 5/7v. Im not really into the mugen2 its ugly :P

Just havent decided yet what fans on the CPU. Either the nexus or slipstreams 1200/800/500.

For casefans I will go with the same aswell.

Any more advice is welcome :) going to order my stuff today :P

I think you have made an awesome choice in regards to the motherboard and processor.

Megahalems are really nice, I have one combined with Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1.450rpm. However this is more for overclocking since it blows as a real hurricane; the noise is very pleasant and outside of the case (ATCS 840) is not heard; you might try with a version that has less rpm (800?).

I think that you would save lots of money in Europe with ATI 4890; it sells for 150Euro (160 Vapor-X) and the performance is the same as 5850 which is 220 euro.
For 80 euro more you get a much more powerful system than a single 5850.

How about the PSU???

Thx well I already bought my 5850 but I wasnt really happy with it so I sold it to my friend who doesnt really care if his computer is a airplane or not :p Im not saying it IS an airplane but the noise it gives even in idle is to much for my standards though performance wise it was an awesome card.

For the PSU im currently going to use my old HX620 wich I am planning to change with a seasonic one but not sure about that yet aslong as this one keeps doin its work :P

Just orderd my megahalem and will now by my fans. For my GPU I still don't know but the vapor-x like you said might be intresting depending on the fan noise, else I was about to go oldskool with my 8800gts and accelero or something.

planning on getting some SSD power aswell :P

Intel SSDs are the best choice at the moment.

I was just discussing them here.

Maybe you could wait till January and buy one GT300; I'm afraid however that the price will be some 400 euro.

lol, true, but...

you can't see it in the p183 case you are buying... unless you were planning on hacking a hole in the side of the case >ack!<

over here you can buy two mugen-2's for the price of a mega+fan... and for an i-5 that won't be overclocked, the mega is way overkill, price-wise.

although the mass of a mugen-2 on an i-5 could be overkill as well

hint: you can't powdercoat plastic :P you'd have to remove all of the panels first

as for hacking a hole in the side panel... somebody out here must have done it already?

and yes, the 1156 bracket is out:
