I don't like doctors...

... One reason why I don't like doctors is that they speak that jargon and letter combination that I don't understand anything.

Today my doctor scared my when explaining that I actually have had history of hypomaniac streaks and started to talk about bipolar polar disorder and talked good 10 mins before saying: Don't worry you don't have one since appareantly I lacked suitable length of manic streaks and I lacked depressive states afterwards.

Jesus Christ!! Why he could not say that like 10 minutes earlier?! So what all was about... Oh, yes I have ADD or ADHD-I... Great. So basicly I have ADHD without hyperactivity but now and then I get hyperactivity streaks?

Oh, this is just splendid. I got new medical letter combination diagnose in to papers with Asperger's. Now I am worried that I might be bipolar too or become one... great! I really wan in genetic lotto...

This is just one of those days I should have never even get out of bed.

Oh but here in Finland, doctor visits aren't that expensive. I mean, just replying to the association of doctors with fat bills by previous post.

I don't have persay hyperactivity, or else it would been regular ADHD... He ordered me a "protection" medication prior actualy dopamine pills. So I won't go bonkers when dopamine's rise... Or so he said. I am not big fan of psycho-pills or generally medicines that can mess up your brains but any help for concentration this point when I am making ggraduation work will be more than welcome.

If I correctly understand protection medications purpouse is to level up feelings and they can be used as anti-depressants. (yayy I have to eat anti-depressant pills even I am not depressed ) so when actual medication starts I won't go hyper-active and hyper-aggressive...

Would you rather hear "ADHD" or "that thing where people can't concentrate on stuff they want to do because some stuff in their stuff in their body is making them be interested in other, shinier stuff"?

Sometimes, jargon is there for a reason.

Sometimes, jargon is there for a reason.

I'd rather hear plain english: "You have thing called ADHD, which means you cannot concentrate due way your brains produce dopamine in your left frontal lobe of your brain. This can be treated with medicine.... etc...."

I am not stupid but I am not doctor and I don't speak same languange doctor and I don't understand their spicific languange. Its same as they don't understand my line of work. However in my line of work we, specialist must be able to translate things in plain english. I kinda expect same for doctors. Understantment is essential.

What is dopamine? What is a left frontal lobe? Where do you draw the line, and why?

I agree that understanding what a doctor tells you is essential. So why don't you try to learn the meaning of these words (if you don't already know)?

I can't say that I don't like doctors, but I certainly don't trust doctors! So if I (or rather one of my pets) have a problem, I start searching for information.
Wikipedia is a good place to start looking, and then I go to PubMed. They have a lot of useful article abstracts. Full articles are ~35$ though.
When I go back to the doctor it may happen that I know more than him about the problem, especially if he isn't aware of recent research breaktroughs.

Personally I look things up myself, but other people might not be as mentally astute as myself, and might drive themselves crazy with their self-diagnosis and possibly misleading information and scare-stories on the internet.

The tactic I have used (but dont any more) is not to bring any paperwork (apart from a couple of words hand written on a scrap of paper), and simply say "blah person, had something similar, could it be xxxxx because I have xxxxxx symptoms". This can be a problem for a stupid doctor (they do exist) as you might simply lead them down a certain path, whereas if you tell them your symptoms they might come up with something different. This is why I changed tactics, if they come up with something you are not expecting, that does not seem as plausable as your own diagnosis then suggest your diagnosis, they might shoot it down for a reason that you overlooked, or the suggestion might help them diagnose you better.

Thanks andy and Tzupy, I got some researching to do. You cannot really expect any medical break thru's from Doctor who works for community and not prized private or national research hospital. Andy, that article and cyberchondriacs was great. Thank you. Infact that doctor confirmed 3 weeks ago my Asperger, something I found 3 years ago as being possible due my behaviour matched so well with classic Asperger patients.

every time i read aspergers, i keep thinking about an episode of "becker" that had the young cute chick laughing about a patient's chart, which she read as "ass-burgers".

not a hard reference to make, i know, but it makes me snicker every time >_<

Combine Asthma, Dysgrammatism\Dyslexia, poor eyesight and things like that with the Asperger's and ADHD-PI/ADD and whatever... I do feel like I wan in genetic lotto a lot poor genes ^^ but perhaps with those I have ability to think out of box and see things a lot differently from normal human beings. So its morely as exchange in my opinion. I lost something due my genes but I gained other things.

I got operated on once. I awoke, yelling, swearing, I even startled the nurses. Chunk missing from hip, a groin pull, and my knee was hurting.. it was not before I went in...

I cursed..he died some years later on a premoniton I had about him..

I knew damn well he made a mistake.... and something else out there did too..

they alter life too much with thier authority, they're gonnameet thier maker...like a pissed off dad to his mistaken son.
