Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4 Fan Control

Post by egalitarian » Thu Dec 24, 2009 2:57 am

I'm considering buying a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4 for my next machine. I have some questions abount the board fan controls though.
1. The board has a 4pin CPU fan header - does that mean that only 4pin pwm fans can be controlled from the board by BIOS, speedfan or any other way?
2. The board has a 3pin system fan SYS_FAN1 - could it be controlled by the board at all?
3. The board has a 4pin system fan SYS_FAN2 - does anybody knows if it needs a 4 pin PWM or 3 pin regular fan will also be good? I'm asking
because it's pinout seems different than the pinout of the CPU_FAN.
What I'm ideally looking for is a board with 2-3 board controlled case fans. Also I don't have access to good PWM fans here - I can find only good regular 3pin fans.

Code: Select all

CPU_FAN
1. GND
2. +12/Speed Control
3. Sense
4. Speed Control
SYS_FAN1
1. GND
2. +12
3. Sense
SYS_FAN2
1. GND
2. +12/Speed Control
3. Sense
4. Reserve
That's the boards manual:

Thanks for your help!

I'm building a GA-P55-UD4P system now. So far, I've used only a PWM fan on the CPU header & haven't used the other headers at all. The motherboard's built-in fan controls are useless for SPCRers, but Speedfan works.

I'll try a 3-pin fan on the other headers and report.

Speedfan cannot control SYS_FAN1. I'll need to dig out an extension cable before I can test the PCH_FAN header.

There's also an unusual interaction on the CPU_FAN port. Speedfan's Speed01 & Speed03 both control it. I suspect that one is PWM control while other is straight VDC, but I'm not certain of that. Turning either to 0 stops the fan. I've not seen anything like this before.

Thanks for the info and yes that sounds kind of strange. What about 3pin fan to SYS_FAN2 - is it controllable separately from CPU_FAN?

I bought the matx version - GA-P55M-UD4 which should be identical to GA-P55A-UD4 fan control wise. At least the manual of those two boards is the same regarding the fan control part. Sadly I can not control neither the CPU fan nor any of the other fans using SpeedFan. Using SpeedFan v4.40, Windows 7 Home 64bit. Tried both with fan control enabled and disabled from the BIOS but speedfan speed1-3 options are not doing anything...

In Speedfan:
1) Configure
2) Advanced
3) Select the ITxxxx chip
4) Change all PWMx modes to software controlled

In windows 7 the Gigabyte fan control software caused a UAC prompt at every log on. Trying to get around this with the scheduler did not work. My solution was to buy 800 rpm fans and not use any other method of fan control. The other alternative would be to use hardware fan controllers.

Sorry about resurrecting an old thread, but I had a question about this motherboard. I'm planning to do an overhaul of my desktop system and was looking at getting this motherboard.

Can the SYS fan headers do any fan control at all? I have a single fanmate and some fairly quiet fans, but I'd like to know what control I have before I buy.

Cheers.

This works perfectly for my Gigabyte UD5, sadly only for the CPU header. Fortunately I have plenty of fan splitter cables.

Just wanted to report on my Gigabyte ga-p55a-ud3 after changing the settings as suggested by HammerSandwich, Speedfan can control the CPU fan and SYS_FAN2. Not SYS_FAN1 but then the manual does say it's not controllable.

Cheers,
Dutchie

My GA-P55M-UD2H (H55 mATX board) in the BIOS states that the CPU_Fan header can support either PWM or VDC fans. In fact I think the selection is specifically

CPU Fan Type: Auto, PWM 4 pin fan, VDC Regulated 3 Pin Fan

I have the GA-P55A-UD3P and I'm using 3-pin connector fans on CPU and SYS_FAN2 controlled by SpeedFan.

Some more observations:
1. There does seems to be some RPM temperature dependency on SYS_FAN2 even though the BIOS only mentions "CPU Smart FAN Control."
2. My chassis fan (Noctua NF-S12-1200) should be good to 4V, but doesn't run at < 800RPM. My CPU fan (Scythe SFF21E) has no such problem and will run at 266RPM.

I wish Gigabyte would put fan control temperatures in the BIOS.
