Best Ati 5770 Air cooler?

Post by ~El~Jefe~ » Fri Apr 02, 2010 2:31 pm

Trying to decide. I might have to dismantle my water system as it wont move with me easily and to a fancy, pricey, NYCity craphole apartment.

taking a poll!

I'm thinking of getting 5770 for my next build + I already have a brand new S1. Seen a thread about cutting and bending and it seems quite easy.

I wouldn't be thinking of this if I didn't have the S1 though.

yeah. bending a heatpipe im a bit nervous about. I would hate to kink it and make it useless. I haven't seen or read a clear explanation about it. I am guessing it probably is the best way to go as it allows for lots of space between fins. I guess.... the others might be just as well. I do like the idea of the 2 Arctic cooling fans stuck on. They would cool the mosfets, the things that make the whole card use less wattage and run cooler. In my opinion, they are more important than the cpu being a few degrees higher.

i wish all the new cards in the future will sit the gpu further away from the I/O of the card :(
having an awesome HSF that doesn't work without mutilating it first is quite depressing...

It seems my answer is the only serious one here. Good!
The L2 is maybe the quietest fanned heatsink I ever had my hands on, so I'm voting for it.

I have the 5770 (a Sapphire ) it is a pretty good card !
I would go for the TR. HR03 revA If I could get one . They seem very scarce on the ground around my neck of the woods ( Brisbane AU )

I'd go for a HD5770 with the backpanel connectors next to eachother (not on top of eachother). With a setsugen (with fanflip) on low. Fan is inaudible and the VRM's get cooled.

Scythe Setsugen? It will fit, but you need to have a card which doesnt have stacked backpanel connectors. Thats the man reason why so much coolers dont fit.

This is the first I've heard of this concept. What are "stacked backpanel connectors"?

See this picture:

See those DVI connectors? They are on top of eachother. I mean that with stacked backpanel connectors.

Wouldnt try it. Just get another card which has no stacked connectors. asus CuCore, PowerColor has one. MSI Hawk is also good for aftermarket coolers.

Ahhh... I was thiking it was something on the backside of the card that interfered with the backplate installation, not the actual outputs.

None of the reference cards will take an aftermarket cooler very well, the socket is too close to the rear of the case. It does look as though many of the non-reference design cards will do just dandy with one. Look for cards where the center of the chip/socket is at least 2/3 back on the PCIe pins:

Some of these already have excellent coolers, the MSI Hawk comes to mind, first in the list. I listed it to as an example of board design.

As of yesterday, the Hawk is also the cheapest (after rebate) Newegg offering with a 4-pin PWM fan header. The really inexpensive models appear to have 2-pin fan headers based on Newegg's pictures. This may or may not be important to you.

The Asus CuCore is nice because it's got a supporting bracket tied into the rear panel bracket to help support the extra weight of an aftermarket cooler.

Yeah, I wish I waited at times, then other times I am glad i didnt. The card will ultimately go on the WC system I am thinking now.

It would be nice to get a 120mm and a big heatsink though. I could make my system more transportable.

performance wise, the card is awesome.

I have a 5770 and L2 and I voted weeks back. What else can I do? :)
The Accelero L2 is quiet but not silent like S1rev2 was on my previous card.

If you are going for cooling-performance and are unwilling to cut in a Accelero S1, HR03 is the way to go. It performs poorly without a fan but excellent with a slow running fan and this makes it really easy for you to decide how much noise you are willing to endure by choosing a proper fan.

The L2 is no performance-cooler and comes with a included fan, Arctic Cooling's fans aren't that great, you can definitively get a much quieter one from Nexus or Scythe.

I agree with everything but the BOLD statement. AC fans ARE great. I have a few. both 92 and 120.
Their hydrodynamic bearing is quiet and they work for years without getting louder. they Undervolt very low and easy. I have 1 in my main system right next to a Slipsteam and the AC is quieter

I have a Sapphire 5770 with TR HR-03 revA in 'reverse' installation so my CPU fan on the Ninja RevB can provide some airflow. No modification was necessary and installation was a piece of cake.

With the CPU fan going at 300rpm, the card stays at 36C, then under Furmark burning load, the fan speed increases to 950rpm and the card maxes out at 58C.

Does anyone know if a T-Rad2 will fit a 5770 v2? My S1 fits just fine, so I assume the same should be true for the T-Rad2.

wow. that's a lot of performance from that cooler. that is how I will roll I think.

THERMALRIGHT $PITFIRE FTW.

Because it's heavy, expensive, doesn't use any slot space and is oversized for a 5770.

I know you'd love it, jefe. Oh and you don't have to bend any fins or pipes, however you will bend your card if you don't secure it properly.

No I don't have one.

Wouldn't the Spitfire interfere with any large tower CPU cooler?
Maybe it could fit with a Minja?

It would. Youre better off if you take a spitfire with a top-down CPU cooler.

I wonder how those coolers will mount if you're in a CrossFire situation.
