Venomous X question - will it mount a 120 x 38mm?

Post by Wedge » Wed Apr 14, 2010 6:00 pm

I have a Venomous X on order. I am currently shopping for a 120mm fan to mount on it.

This Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm x 38mm Fan, 2000 RPM (DFS123812L-2000) has my attention due to the 38mm depth that provides more static pressure, probably making it a good choice? I know the "recommended fans" section reports on a few Scythe models, but none speak of a fan with the 38mm design, so I am blindly assuming this to be a good choice for a tower heatsink. Chime in if you have an opinion on this.

The larger question looming for me right now is: will the provided fan bracket even allow for a fan with the 38mm dimension? Does anybody know the answer to this?

I think I have my answer. Some googling lead me to this (plenty of pics):
overclockers.com forum member review.

I didn't know the wire clips worked the way they do until scrolling down and getting an up-close view of how the fan mounts. It seems any 120mm fan will do, regardless of depth.

You just have to look a little harder for the SPCR review of that fan:

Not really a quiet fan at all and there are better performing fans.

Consider some other Scythe fans from the Gentle Typhoon (1150/1450/1850rpms) and S-Flex (1200/1600rpms) (SPCR review) range for your cooler instead. You're planning on using some form of fan speed control to slow down your fan speed at idle, right?

2 x quiet Nexus Real Silent fans could be pretty good as well.

Alternatively, consider a PWM fan like the Nexus PWM or Scythe Kama PWM.

Not every 120mm fan. Make sure you get one with open corners. If the corners are closed it will not work.

The Scythe Ultra Kaze 120mm x 38mm Fan, 2000 RPM looks good. It is not. Don't get it. I have the 3000 rpm one. SPCR tested all three. They panned them - and they were too kind. If you really want to pressure get two GTs or two Apaches. Or order one of Dorthy Bradbury'a fans from the UK.

I know that it looks good, it feels good, its logical - but you will never keep it in your computer.

Glad i didn't order it last night.

Absolutely. Probably a Zalman controller set to ~7-9 volts.

I ordered 2 of the Scythe E-series (1200 rpms) late last night. The 38mm becomes a non-issue for now.

Much better choice. Start them out at 5v and see how they do.
