I'm not exactly sure the answer to your question, but in your log you got "FahCore_a3.exe" required so I think you are on the right track :) That's all I've been getting with my Linux/Mac SMP runs and even though every project has been worth only 440ish points, I finally got one today that gave me 2,949 :)

Your project (6012) is also on the SMP bonus calculator: http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php ... At 6 minutes 20 secs per frame, it says you will do 5581PPD once the bonus kicks in :)

I finally got my first bonus after ~ 14 a3 runs, but I didn't have a passkey right away and at least one crashed when I restarted my Virtualbox Linux instance. I should be finishing another run in about 10 minutes so I will see if the bonuses continue and I make it past 10K :)

oh, and I see you are running Windows and a GTX 295... have you tried the GPU client? Seems like the way to go on Windows is VMWare Player with Linux and 7 cores for Linux SMP and 1 core for your GPU client :) I'm running Mac OS on my i920 @ 3.2GhZ so no GPU love for me. The Mac client on my "hackintosh" is also a piece of junk though, at least on my Mac Mini (poor thing, chugging along for 19 minutes per frame) with 10.5 it seems stable.

Anyway, I should be in bed and not waiting for my next project to finish :)

Hi,
I don't think you are. It should say "arguments : -smp -advmethods"
Your line says "arguments : -smp"

If that helps you, I use this link to launch my SMP client :
C:\FAH\[email protected] -smp -advmethods

Also, do you have a passkey ?

if you selected "Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [yes]?" during setup then the client will start with advmethods.

There is nothing to worry about.

If you want to check that this setting is still on run -configonly.

Thanks everyone, i will check the config when i get home from work.

The computer in my sig is at my parents home currently. I'm folding right now on a AMD A x4 620 @ 3ghz and a 9600 gso.

Thanks again for the help.

So, I thought I'd try out folding for SPCR since I love the site and my core i7 box is generally bored ;) Now I'm trying to keep from getting too addicted... it maybe too late :)

Anyway, I'm so annoyed!!! My UPS died this morning and my Linux folding VM came back without an IP address, and apparently didn't retry when the network came back... so when I came home, it had given up trying to get *new* work, so I just cleanly rebooted it so I didn't have to mess with ethtools/dhcpd/blah blah...

But when it came back, it didn't upload my finished WU! It just got a new one and started folding :( My date of last WU on stanford's site is 5:04 (9AM ish) and that's when my Mac Mini also happened to finish. I even found "qgen" and tried creating a new queue.dat (qfix saw the orphaned entry but didn't do anything). Bummer.

Anyway, this seems like a great cause to spend a 100W or so in a fun competition ;) It may actually push me over the edge to get a new PS3... :)

Welcome to the team, Edan! The new network is not uncommon, as the servers for [email protected] sometimes get too busy, etc.

Welcome, welcome, welcome, Edan!

Yes, it is addicting, but there are worse things out there....

I looked over my last electric bill. I did enjoy the comeback of getting my quad gpu setup running again, but I neglected now that my 2 remotes PCs together were sucking 600 watts out of the wall.

The secondary machine, an older X2 with dual GPUs has a PPD/W under 30. I can't justify having that thing on anymore, so I switched it off.

I need to move to Canada or something. Hey Mike C, can you rent me a room?

This should do some folding...

Dayum. Finally, a fermi that could beat my gtx 295. I'd probably have to do a power supply upgrade to get that thing going, but you know what? I kinda want it. ;)

And it has other advantages. It toasts bagels, cooks hot dogs and hamburgers to perfection, and has a removeable drip pan so you can toss all that nasty grease.

You can also set it next to the TV on Christmas, so when you watch the Yule Log burning you will actually be able to feel the heat radiating off of it. Talk about realism.

Seriously, how big is the cooler for this thing? Or does it come with water cooling by default?

Get a water cooled system, use the steam to get one of those mini turbines running and feed the electricity to the card :)
And heat up the neighbourhood with all the left over heat !!

EDIT : I will be moving soon... so my computer won't be folding for a bit of time... Darn, I really wanted to hit the million mark before moving...

Hey Frenchi, sorry to hear about it. I'm hoping to move at some point, so I'll probably lose a few days.

But yeah, I have to wonder how they're going to cool that thing. I'd imagine a triple slot cooler built in could be the answer, but eh, they'll probably just make the fan go fast and make it noisier. Ideally, if we get some decent aftermarket coolers for the 470/480, we could move toward dual gpu systems that might run somewhat quiet.

Remember that these new WU are part of the bonus points, so when you do 10 of them on time, then you get a lot more points.

My main machine (iMac) has been working on a 6041 WU for 2 1/2 days (it is at 93%) and is worth 472PPD.

Post by cordis » Thu Jun 03, 2010 12:24 pm

Yeah, you have to take the bonus into account, I'd recommend getting hfm.net (find it here: http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/)
It does everything fahmon does, and it accounts for bonuses (although it can be a little optimisitic, I think). But 57 min. per step is still not too great, even with the bonus it's not ripping along, what's that running on?

They've lately started up some A3 bigadv projects, which basically seems to be the beginning of the end for the bigadv big points stuff. On the i7 980x, I can get 33k ppd with the gpu off, but I got an A3 bigadv last week, and I was getting 25kppd a day. The new projects may allow bigadvs to run on Windows (although they aren't doing it yet, I think), but the previous bigadv linux people will get screwed, I think. Anyway, I hope you haven't gotten one of those.

it running on a 3.2GHz E7200 CPU...
This is annoying : FahMon says it'll take about 3 days to finish and the deadline is in 2 days... great...

I'll try hfm.net and see what it says, thanks.

And perhaps it's actively scanning all running programs, like Bit Defender.

Bit Defender brought all my folding to almost a complete stop. After I told it to ignore folding it ran as before. I also had to tell BD to ignore IE, disk defragger, and some other programs. I find it to work but it is a little too aggressive.

An e7200? Most of the info I have on that says it runs at 2.53 GHz. Have you overclocked it? Anyway, that's just a dual core, so it won't be a killer cpu or anything, but it should get some work done. Just estimating, but I'd say in the 1500 to 2000 ppd range. Probably more, I have a 1.3Ghz dual core, and it does about 800ppd, so that's right around 2000 ppd if it scales linearly, but it should be slightly exponential. But yeah, Aristide is right, check the background processes, be sure to shut down any screensavers or other intensive stuff. I find the worst offenders to be browsers, I have to make sure to close up firefox if I'm not using it, or else it will just suck down cpu cycles.

I like that palit one with the dual fans, palit has a bunch of cards with coolers like that, I'm glad to see one for fermi. And with an hdmi port, that would be great for my htpc. Hmmm....

Hey Cordis, I haven't looked into it. I just moved a few thousand miles and the computer is still somewhere in the world with some of my stuff... but not in my new house yet !! It might get here tomorrow or the day after.
But when it gets here, and after a PSU fan swap, a major GPU mod, and a general health check of the computer (only God knows what happened to it on the way here...) I' ll look into it.
This problem is just weird, it's the first time this has happened to this machine. Usually it folds fast enough to finish all the WUs. And it's frustrating to get a WU that has a deadline in 2 days and you know it's going to take 3 days to finish it...
As soon as the computer is up and running, I'll gladly break the million points mark !!!!

PSU fan swapped, VERY UGLY GPU mod done (not tested yet), computer cleaned....
All I need is a keyboard with a wire to boot !!! (I have to press F1 to boot for some reason but my wireless keyboard won't work for some reason)

And then I'll finally pass those 1 million points !! Be back soon hopefully !!

[EDIT : GPU mod is a disaster cooling wise (stopped the load test at 100C)... Bending the pipes on the Accelero works only if they don't get twisted, which is partly what I did... Oh well, life is about trial and error right ? Mostly error though... The point is I need a new GPU cooler, and I'll finally try the Nexus fan that is SPCR's favorite !! Will update ASAP]

cooler ideas

Post by cordis » Thu Jun 17, 2010 12:24 am

Hey, sorry to hear about it Frenchie. Assuming that the gpu is the one in your sig, a 9800 gtx, you have a bunch of options, here's a good shop that shows some of them:

http://www.svc.com/vga-cooler.html

Scroll down to about the middle, and there's the Prolimatech mk-13 and the thermalright t-rad 2, either of those might work. But I'm not sure what your case constraints are, I assume that if you tried bending the pipes, then you must have been trying something a little different. But whatever, if you want any more suggestions, post again. :)

Thanks Cordis !
I'm trying to find a VGA cooler that stands as far away from the card as possible and that requires the least amount of airflow to work well. The best candidate so far seems to be the HR-03 GT...
FYI, what I tried to do is this : viewtopic.php?t=56520&highlight=
I don't have great tools so it doesn't look great. I can takes pics and post them if necessary but sonce it's a failure...

Is someone has a better idea, please let me know !!!
