It installed very easy. No problems. I even reused the thermal compound that was left on the 6850-GPU.




Idle temp up from 37°C (Old HD 3870) Right now I'm reading 41°C, load temp is around 80°C. Running the top 20cm fan in L-mode (only fan in system).

Not bad. You may want to install a couple of fans on it and run them REALLY slow to shave off 8-10 degrees. An AC Turbo module or Scythe Jyu fans will fit perfectly.

if youre not using the bottom hdd caddy, i would say that adding an intake fan would help.. the pci slot covers on the mini p180 are kinda open, so airflow out the back should be decent.

Thanks you for the pictures and well documented process. One of my rigs is the same case but in black. I believe it is one of the best PC cases ever.

The system currently has Sapphire 3870 Ultimate HD silent units that has been chugging along without a hitch for about >18 months. With the heatsink fins being on the back of the card it works out well with the 120mm rear exhaust fan that comes installed at the factory.

The only thing I'm waiting on to be delivered for my upgrade to an "i" series rig is a SCYTHE SP1225FDB12L fan to go where the lower drive cage is located. Since I have not been able to get a release date from either vendors or Powercolor for their silent 6850 that was announced back at the end of November I picked up a Gigabyte silent 5770. Since the heatsink fins on that card are oriented on the front (lower) part of the card, having the fan on the front blowing across will give it quiet airflow. This will likely allow the removal of the 1200mm rear exhaust fan.

Did you alter the default bios settings to reflect the change to a fanless card?

does it make sense to hook up a 120mm intake case fan up to the PWN terminal of the graphics card? are there store bought adapters or is it a home brew project?

Also if you add a case fan you might want to make a duct that will send all of the air under the card where the cooler is and not the half it will get by default.

I have no idea really. Maybe it works. As of now the card peaks at 83°C, but mostly runs at 75°C, a bit high maybe, but no signs of trouble yet, so I think I will keep it fan-less. Maybe risky.

My past HD3870 peaked at 75°C, and always worked great.

Sure. It's a great box.

I have not altered any bios settings. But I have turned the GPU down to 750MHz (from 820Mhz). Same for memory (1000MHz, was 1050MHz).

Anyway, if I change anything, I will update this thread.

75c is perfectly acceptable for a GPU, most of them run around this temp with their stock coolers. The problem with a fanless setup is that the VRM area doesn't get any forced ventilation. So the MOSFETs could be running very high. Their temperature isn't read anywhere.

Maybe they're fine, unless you want to employ an IR-thermometer or something similar, you'll not find out. Measuring with your fingers will get you burned either way, because "save" temps for MOSFETs is anything under 100c.

the cheapest laser thermometer is still more expensive than the best case fan.

Just wanted to say thanks for the thread. I just finished putting two S1's on the same cards in CF in my system, it's really nice not to hear the fans anymore when I'm idling or watching TV. Considering my case is open mesh, the system is now as quiet as it's going to get. (When playing games I need to turn the case fans up a bit, but that's what fan controllers are for...)

Yeah, and the little buggers don't stick very well until you've got it all heated up. If you're trying this at home, the one on the bottom right needs to be offset a couple mms to the right or one of the S1's heatpipes will hit it and knock it off when you go to install it.
