Re: Fortron Source Aurum GOLD series 400-700w review
FSP had been offering them from Amazon for prepurchase (supposedly shipping March 16th). The 400 watt unit was $80 + $4 shipping. I was tempted, but didn't bite...

Strange, current unavailable at Amazon.
Here in Europe no problems with order. Mostly shops have Aurum in their stores.

From the dirkvader.de review of the 400W, the idle fan noise seems to be a little on the high side. Kinda disappointing for a Gold unit. What'd you reckon?

I can't give you objective opinion. Because my AC Freezer 7 pro is much louder.
I can give you only my review which i wrote for another forum.
System:
E5200 1620 MHz @1.150v , Load @3375MHz @1.150v
Gigabyte EG31MF-S2
Hitachi HDT725050VLA 500GB Sata
Gigabyte HD4670
2x 1GB Kingston DDR2 800
Psu compare:
Fortron GLN 350w - 80 plus
Idle E5200-1620MHz @1.150v - 67w
Load E5200-2500MHz @3.375MHz @ 1.150v - Orthos 2x cpu - 107w
FSP Aurum 400w - 80 Gold
Idle 5200-1620MHz @1.150v - 60 w
Load E5200-2500MHz @3.375Mhz @ 1.150v - Orthos 2x cpu - 97 w
Conclusion
Fortron GLN 350w FSP Aurum 400w different
Idle 67w vs 60 w = 7w
load 107w vs 97 w = 10w
Aurum 400w GOLD experiences. *Only from 1h use*
First loook at this psu you are shocked, you think its some crap
Unconventional manufacturing the exterior with some new add on color. The top is not smooth and don't shine like FSP 350 GLN and many others psu's. Aurum is coarse and flat painted with logo FSP.
Aurum 400w sound is very low, cpu cooler makes the biggest noise(AC Freezer7 pro). I'm not 100 % sure, if fan in psu was running. I will try later. ( yes fan run)
Efficiency was good, like i expected GLN 350 lost the battle.
Different at idle was ~7w nearly to compare Seasonic S12II-330 with GLN350. At load jump to ~10w. Here i expected more (14w-15w) because vs S12II-330 was 14w.
Dirkvader new review was added, Seasonic X400-FL lost the battle too.

Re: Fortron Source Aurum GOLD series 400-700w review
I took delivery of a FSP Aurum 700W and notice that the idle fan noise (150W draw at the wall) is somewhat excessive for a 91% efficient power supply. I haven't measured the speed but estimate it around 900rpm as it does make a fair bit of noise, even tucked away in the lower chamber of a P183. I'd imagine that for typical users they might not even notice the noise but I do.
Power saving is 10%-12% compared with an 80Plus OCZ StealthXStream 600W.
Considering swapping the fan out for a lower speed one. Surely it doesn't need to spin at 1000rpm to dissipate just 15W of heat.
I've also noticed that under load it ramps up quite a bit. From reviews it seems that FSP have fitted a fast fan rather than trying to keep noise down.
System:
Intel i7 920 oc 3.6Ghz
ATI HD4890
3x 7200rpm HDD

Code: Select all

Newegg has the FSP Aurum Gold 400W PSU for $80 with free shipping.
It's tempting but it may be louder than what I currently have- plus with my case it's designed to use rear-blowing PS if needed. It does appear 18A is more than enough for my video card, though.
