Here is one interesting CPU Cooler
http://www.nofencomputer.com/eng/

They apparently make special cases for it as well.

Jesus, that thing is huge.

Factor in the Scythe Susanoo and a new age of gigantism seems to be dawning.

Would struggle to run a graphics card with that beast in your system unless you have a multi GPU board and can leave the first slot empty. :?

 Seems totally overkill to me, especially as the smaller the manufacturing processes get for chips the less heat they will produce...

Very Very Very Impressive. I wonder how tall it is.

Only 2 heat pipes, and not direct touch?

I would laugh if this thing has higher thermal impedance than more normal sized coolers. :D

Edit: looks like it's 4 heat pipes and they are only leaving the base in one direction per pipe...

160mm tall by 210mm square.

Well, it is dustless... it has what looks like wires for fins.

Ah, so it uses four 100mm fans and not 120mm fans, as a lot of news snippets claim.

Judging by the weight, they spread the fins of a standard high-end heatsink to make airflow easier. Good idea, but the covering of a GPU slot seems unnecessary.

The direct touch thing is overrated. A flat surface works perfectly well for many models, even at the very high end, as you can see in various charts.

Direct touch heat pipe is aim to lower the cost. Flat surface has better performance, actually, some cooler (e.g. thermalright) is not exactly "flat" because of the shape change when touching the CPU cover.

210(L)*210(W)*160(H)mm including the fans?

I think that fanless cooler is only for CPUs up to about 90W or so. I wonder how it would do if they used an extra heatpipe or two?

That Scythe cooler is stupid huge. I wonder if it will actually perform as well as it is big? And I wonder how many people will actually be able to use it?

Actually, fanless is only good for about 40-50W max. Beyond that, it's horrendously hard to get rid of the heat quickly enough without a massive external heat sink or something similar.

While many CPUs are capable of generating such heat outputs... they seldom in practice come anywhere close to doing so. That is doubly so for the most recent generation of cpus.

Well here is the review on it:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cases/ ... t-a40.html
The passive Nofen heatsink is compared to the passive Thermalright HR-2 (I think this is the first HR-2 review that I have seen)
They also tested a nonpassive Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus at 600 RPM

The review is a mixed bag, but the Nofen seems to perform reasonably well against the Thermalright HR-2 and the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus at 600 RPM

As Prolimatech was spun out of Thermalright,
Nofen Corporation was spun out of Zalman
Nofen is less than a year old. It's focus is on quiet PCs.

They don't seem to mention the efficiency of their PSU. Are the "wires" on the heatsink actually heatpipes?

Nope. they are akin to the "pins" of the classic "Alpha" heatsinks.

http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&co ... 0&bih=1025

The only differences are of course that the wires or "long pins" are attached to heatpipes, and obviously they are much longer. If they were heatpipes they would be very fragile at only 2mm thick, and would cost a fortune to manufacture.

I find this interesting because it works. If this design works, no doubt others can make it work as well, ideally with a much smaller design.

I have an Alpha leftover from an AMD Socket A system, sitting on the shelf above my desk. Good ideas get recycled?

i think an obvious evolution on this design exists in my kitchen, as a double balloon whisk. it'd take up the same amount of space, but you could increase the length of the wires.

nofen "Whisk" cooler

Post by ces » Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:32 am

The Nofen cooler seems to call out for a 500 rpm downdraft fan in the middle.

Seen that one in the shop here in Akihabara in Tokyo, [expletive deleted] that thing is huge.

Performance-PCs has the scythe susanoo! lots of specs and pictures...

honestly... i think if i had a p190/3 this would be something i'd consider. probably be able to get away with only using that side fan.

I myself prefer the Parrot Drone. It is even more ostentatious. I think you can put it in hover mode. How about bringing that to the lan party :)

Size does make a difference.

its 160mm high with the fans, so only 135 without them. definitely would fit.

Yes, Rev. B has an actual clearance of 145mm.

Just as a side note, provided it fits without its fans, I don't know whether or not it would be a really good idea (to pair this cooler with that enclosure), but that's a completely different (OT) argument.
