Quiet GeForce GTX 650 Ti card

They make noise, too.

Quiet GeForce GTX 650 Ti card

Post by gandrusz » Fri Nov 09, 2012 6:09 am

NVidia introduced GeForce GTX 650 Ti quite recently. I was thinking about upgrading my old card, and this one is right in my target budget. It seems to be quite energy-efficient for the performance as well, so hopefully a good candidate for a quiet card...

Can anyone recommend a reasonably quiet card with this GPU? I would like the card to be almost silent with small and moderate load, I don't mind a bit of non-disturbing noise while gaming.

GTX 650 Ti reviews compiled here. Take a look at the MSI Cyclone.

From looking at the reviews I also think that the MSI will be the best choice.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

If you don't mind me asking, how did the card work out in the end? Besides acoustics, obviously, I would be very interested in hearing how the real-world gaming capabilities panned out.

I have to wait until they promote a driver new enough to Debian Testing that handles this card :( I will certainly post an update here once I have it though.

Amazing how Debian considers an obsolete driver not ready for 'testing'. I can't say I agree with Debian and would strongly suggest from a performance and reliability perspective to download the series 310 drivers direct from NVIDIA. The 310 series has some massive performance improvements.

I'll add my comments for the MSI 650 Ti OC (non-Cyclone) once I get the card. It can be had for only 130 euros, whereas the Cyclone one would be 180, and then you might as well pay 30 more for the vanilla 660 - unless you absolutely want the efficiency of the 650 Ti, which I do.

All the review tests are ran at High or Ultra or whatever detail and with AA on so as to bring out the differences in cards, but barely any actually report how the card would do at like Medium detail and with no AA (unnecessary at high resolutions IMO, it's a stopgap measure for low res jags). This is where we need user experiences.

I finally bought the card (MSI GTX 650 Ti Power Edition with the Cyclone 2 heatsink) and installed it in my system. It is rather loud for the first 30 seconds after the system is turned on (because, as I found out on the box, it runs in reverse to clean the heatsink), and then reasonably quiet. The disappointing thing is the noise characteristics - at least my unit produces a lot of "clicking" instead of smooth hum like the other fans in the system. This is not particularly obtrusive after the case is closed, but the other components in my system are certainly not quiet, so it might be an issue for other people.

Thanks for commenting on the Power Edition gandrusz! My experience was similar, the fan characteristics just aren't quite as good as I'm used to, though the fan is quiet at idle. In my card's case I chalked it up to it being the budget model.

I forgot to link the comments in this thread, so here you go, if someone wants to see them: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=65468. The long and short of it is that I think the card is adequate and good value, but certainly not silent - however due to the very low price, a silent aftermarket cooler would be easy to add.
