Linus does Silent PC ... with a little help from his friends

Post by MikeC » Sun Dec 21, 2014 12:15 pm

Everyone seems to be getting into it these days: Silent Gaming PC Build Guides. We've done several & are working on more. Meanwhile, Linus of Youtube Tech Talks fame came to SPCR Labs a week ago seeking help with verifying the acoustics of his silent gaming build. The youtube video went up last night up & it's created a big surge in traffic today.

Cool, You forgot to mention you were in the vid! Nice to see ya and your setup, very nice. I think that guy did a great job of putting together a quiet build. For most people that would be a significant difference from their old noisy build. A few improvements and he is silent but for the most part its a great example of what you should do when you want to build a quiet pc.

Fantastic! really great to see (and hear) the man behind the SPCR soundproof curtain! 8)

Everyone duck for the incoming traffic...

So Mike, (and other SPCR's) what would you change/tweak in linus' build to bring the SPL down below 20? or did linus basically achieve the quietest this beast can attain?

Uh... dunno  I actually haven't watched the video yet. Too busy with a Quiet MATX Build.

Yeah, apparently, the initial traffic rush from the Linus video froze the server for most users for a few hours in the wee hours.

The question is what is making it going into 27dba, GPU Fans? Case Fans? CPU FAN?

1 Rear case fan, cpu cooler is fanless (dark rock pro 3), Is the strix passive at idle?, cause its noisy under load. I still think it's a nice build and he did a good job.

This was a great video. I've been looking to upgrade from my i7-920 (tired of the slow sata2 & USB2, etc), but Broadwell keeps getting delayed. Good to know a silent build is possible with Haswell-E despite the 140w TDP.

The video says 27db is the limit for a "quiet build" label. 24db while gaming? That's great. As long as it's silent under light load. Hope Linus gets lots of positive feedback to do more videos like this one. X99 silent build, here I come.

I've been watching a lot of LinusTech videos. He touches on silent components really often in his videos, and I found it weird that he never mentioned SPCR before.

I won't lie, when I saw MikeC show up in the video unannounced (no mention in the video's title), I was like, NO WAIII. Internetz crossover episode.

Really a nice video, especially when seeing SPCR dedicated testing room and tools (I think it was the first time).
Now I wonder when we could read this SPCR SLI Gaming machine build guide as cooling dual GPU is quite complicate with much less air flow and less options than CPU cooling.

Great video, interesting to get a look of the room, also nice to have a face to go with the name. :)

Last but not least, great for SPCR to get some exposure. :!:

Excellent video, and I am glad SPCR had a key role. Linus is a smart guy - he knows integrity is everything, and he stays away from hyperbole.

What was the specifics of the loudest state of the system? That is the one part it would be good to know.

Couldn't tell you the fine details as I didn't examine the system, but do have image captures of the audio spectrum at idle and load.

Thanks Mike - virtually all the increase in noise is between 50Hz and 1000Hz. I was wondering what was the threshold when the fan(s) that were making the increased noise was?

After reading the mATX build, I wonder if Linus' rear dust filter had any impact. It's small, but if it choked air to the cpu cooler, maybe it cost a few db on load?

You have to ignore anything below 100~150Hz, for the most part. The chamber doesn't have much isolation down there, so a bus 2 blocks away can affect that reading as we're at such low SPL.

Congrats for the appearance! Maybe you could get your hands on that Bequiet! case which looks like a worthy opponent of FD Define. I'm curious how effective those silicone hdd rails are.

We're supposedly getting a bequiet! case any time now.

Nice to see you on the silver screen Mike. Hopefully this means more video appearances in the future with Linus, NCIX or maybe Newegg?

That BeQuiet case looks interesting, although a bit large for my liking.

Happy New Year!

Oh! I didn't know you were in the video Mike. I'll have to watch the video until the end now.
