GTX 1070 Review Compilation Thread

Post by CA_Steve » Fri Jun 10, 2016 7:23 am

In brief: Great 1440p/low 2160p, 160W TDP, but OEM stock OC'ed cards will use 180-185W at stress loads. HDMI 2.0b and Display Port 1.4(ready). Supports dual link DVI-D but not analog. Requires one 8-pin PCIe Graphics power connector, but OEM designs may use more. Dimensions stated as: a" x b" x c" are from mfgr websites - others are from reviews. Similar in performance to GTX 980 Ti.

The MSI looks very impressive, quieter than a lot of cards, and the temps seems very nice aswell. I really want to see TPU reviews to see how it measures to older cards.

PS. The link on the hardwareinfo doesn't work and the 7 for the 8.

Slightly off topic for everyone except Abula - Blizzard sent me a Legion Beta invite yesterday. So, I'll get to see how well my current rig runs with it.

Although we have yet to see more reviews, I'm leaning towards Asus Strix GTX 1070 rather than MSI Gaming GTX 1070. While it appears that MSI version has a bit more proper cooler covering all VRAM and VRM chips and Asus seems to cover only VRM chips in its entirety, MSI version consumes way too much power for the likes of me who prefer silent gaming. Truth to be told, VRAM cooling does not really matter that much in reality while VRM cooling can matter to some extent.

Secondly, as far as I can gather, Asus uses identical three-fan coolers both for GTX 1070 and GTX 1080, which is far larger than that of GTX 970. I conjecture Asus Strix GTX 1070 "non-overclocked" version might be the best option for silent gaming. My conjecture is based on the observation that most "overclocked" versions of Nvidia cards do not achieve substantial performance improvements while consuming excessive additional power, which is certainly unwelcome for silent gaming.

Both Asus and MSI are making multiple SKUs of the GTX 1070. Some OC'ed, some not. So, you can buy the least OC'ed version if you wish. Or, you can use utilities like MSI's Afterburner to adjust the amount of OC/voltage applied. Chances are, if two gfx cards run at the same GPU and RAM freq's, they use the same or close to the same applied voltages and consume simliar amounts of power at load (with a caveat toward their power management design differences).

I wonder if my Seasonic 460 fanless PSU could handle the following:

AMD 1090T + either Polaris 8gb version or MSI gaming 1070gtx?

I think it should be fine right? recommended is 460 is close to 500watts. I wish i bought the 520 watt fanless psu now. I heard at the time about whining issues in certain set-ups so i just got the 460. I wonder if that 60 watts is needed though.

I know in my next build, this summer, I will have either a e3-1275 v5 Xeon or i7-5775c paired with one of those cards and will be way below wattage. However, the 1090T is not that efficient. I should get a power angel.... keep forgetting that!

125W CPU, 50W for mobo and everything else (unless you have a slew of HDDs), and the gfx card. If AMD doesn't get it's act together, then it'll be a 225W or so gfx card. So, stress load of 400W for stock builds. Call it 320W for gaming loads.

Well, the AMD Polaris card, 4gb or 8gb is a single 6 pin connector. The Nvidia is 8 pin.

125w 1090T (didnt know that)
50w for mobo (I guess it's that much)
140 for Polaris 480 card
5 watt SSD
1 blu ray combo drive
4 Fans
-----
I guess thats just about 350 watts. Should be smooth and safe at that level. Of course, that is at max gaming level, assuming 6 cores blazing and gpu maxed out.

Does a psu need headroom? like people get 750's and they only draw 550.

I believe Seasonic derated the higher wattage fanned parts for fanless operation. So, you don't need much headroom.

I think you should wait until there are reviews from the satm site to judge them apples to apples.

My guess is that even if MSI is less efficient on the electoric side is more efficient on the cooler and the design of the vbios fan control, that said is just my guess, i think we need to see more reviews from the same site to see how Asus vs MSI does.

Palit GTX 1070 GameRock Premium Edition seems to be a masterpiece in acoustic terms.

ComputerBase Review:
http://www.computerbase.de/2016-06/pali ... rock-test/

It's heavily overclocked GTX 1070 with boost clock frequency of 2076 MHz (Can it ever be overclocked further than this?). According to their tests, it consumes more power than the GTX 1080 Founder's Edition, which is a bit disappointing. However, the GPU temperature was 68 Celsius at the fan speed of 970 rpm, where the noise level was 32.5dB. In comparison, MSI GTX 970 Gaming achieved 74 Celsius at the noise level of 40dB. 74C@40dB to [email protected] must be an enormous improvement. Note that, in their tests, the total power consumption of the system was 254W and 278W, respectively for Palit GTX 1070 and MSI GTX 970.

I have no idea on their coolers on less-overclocked GTX 1070 versions but, if the cooler design is the same, they will be even quiter and surely will be something to be reckoned with.

Another review of Palit GTX 1070 GameRock Premium Edition from HEXUS.net:

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/ ... m-edition/

THE quietest ever GTX 1070/1080 GPU. In full load, the GPU temperature is 70 Celsius with the fan speed "under" 1000 rpm. The total system power consumption is 220W, sandwiched between GTX 1070 Founder's 198W and GTX 1080 Founder's 241W. Quite impressive! Less aggressively overclocked versions will certainly be quieter than this.

Quote from the conclusion section:

"Quiet as a church mouse under the harshest of gaming loads, the brute-force approach works well on this otherwise mainstream-sized GPU."

Did anyone noticed the big diference in temp between Asus strix gtx 1070 and Asus strix gtx 1080 @KitGuru review? 28/59/59 for 1070 and 29/63/70 for gtx 1080. Is this a mistake? A typo? or is this a real thing? I would have expected similar results in temp between those two cards.

Even though the stock TDPs are 160W and 180W, aftermarket cards may raise the target power for their overclock. Take a look at the difference in the system power use while gaming for the two reviews. 256W vs 330W. Figure the majority of the difference is the Graphics card. So, 4C difference in temps while gaming and 11C with a power virus isn't unexpected. Actually, only 4C difference while gaming looks pretty nice. Would have to compare the fan speeds to know more.

Techpowerup MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8 GB
In gaming, the card is also extremely quiet, reaching as low as 30 dBA, which makes nearly noise-free gaming with even such a power house as the GTX 1070 possible.

Temperatures are good, too. Excellent job, MSI!

So a new Nvflash is out that works with the 1070/1080, and people seem to have been successful in flashing AIB card BIOSes to FE cards.

Has anyone tried it so that the fan on the FE doesn't spin at idle? Or at least reduce the speed.

The operating fans only occurs while working on heavier loading such as gaming that the GPU temperature surpasses 50°C.
…which doesn't quite make sense to me, but I'd interpret as being passive to 50°C.

Welcome to SPCR. My lazy shorthand of "passive idle" should be passive idle/2D loads. I think like a gamer. :)

I think most of the cards are showing passive fans to 50-60C. Didn't see it for the Palit card in a review, yet.

Hi. I totally haven't been lurking here for a decade or anything. :)

It mostly just caught my attention given all the other cards have comments about what temperature they're idle to, rather than anything else—made me expect it was going to be passive to 40°C or less.

Am wondering what GTX 1070 to order in a month or two, will hopefully see more reviews by then! Time to finally move on from my GTX 580…

I can confirm that the Palit fans (in Jetstream/Super Jetstream/Gamerock/Gamerock Premium editions) do not rotate up to 60 Celsius. You can easily change the fan curve in MSI Afterburner or Palit equivalent.

The idle temperature of my Palit GTX 1070 Super Jetstream (when the fans are not rotating) hovers around 45 Celsius.

Depending on your monitor resolution and the games you play, you might wait for the GTX 1060. It's going to be ~$250 and comparable to the GTX 980 in performance.

For ease of calculation, GTX 1070 is 3/4 of GTX 1080 in terms of CUDA cores. GTX 1060 is 2/3 of GTX 1070 in terms of CUDA cores. Since the base clocks are lower in lower versions, you should expect that GTX 1060 performance is no more than 67% of GTX 1070, whose performance in the same way cannot exceed 75% of GTX 1080. Before diving into massive amount of benchmarks, you might get a quick glimpse into their overall performances simply by comparing these numbers.

Another way of saying that the 1060 is 1/2 of the GTX 1080..with some memory BW fudging (wider than half, but slower) that comes out 0.6 of the BW rather than 0.5. We'll find out the nature of the beast on July 19.
