Well, I'm getting about 0.35 points per hour of CPU time so far, so somehow I don't think I'll catch up with you guys in a hurry :(

(P3-733, Tinkers only so far, 30 minutes per frame, 400 frames per WU, 71 points per WU so far)

pdf, make sure you have the command line option -forcesse enabled. I think that PIIIs are okay at tinkers, and enabling SSE which they support will help a bit.

P3's should default to using SSE, and Tinkers do not utilize SSE anyway. There's nothing you can do to speed up a Tinker. :(

Don't worry about the tinker. It seems that everyone gets a tinker as their first work unit. I think every processor I ran F@H on got a tinker for the first work unit.

And Welcome to the team :D

I must be lucky. All of the last 10 comps I added got gromacs first. In fact, none of them have gotten a tinker yet. Could it be because they are p4 2.4c's?

I have p4 2.6c, but I got a Tinker for my first one. It is still foldind, but I expect it to finish later tonight.
In fact it should have finished this morning, but because my cpu fan turned off on its own in the middle of the night  The computer shut off as a security measure. The final temp was recorded at 95 degree Celsius!!!! But I think there was no harm done... yet...

On to another subject, I've been to http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=31574 , but can't find my username on the page (samwc912). Is this normal? I have entered the right team number in the config. Or should I do something else that I've missed? And I can't find myself anywhere in the stats.

I don't think anything will get reported until the work is returned. I could be wrong on that though.

Rechecked on the status of the work, and you're right. The WU has just been finished and I'm in the stats now. I've finished that huge 400 frames sTinker, and I'm at 8% of a new 200 Gromac.
But I got 71 points for 1 WU though. So is it better to work on tinkers for getting more points or it adds up to the same doing gromacs for the same amount of time.

Actually that kind of depends. If you have a processor with SSE capabilities (you do) you will score higher with Gromacs. If your processor does not do SSE you will be scoring higher with the tinkers.

Do you know about adding tags? -advmethods etc?

Yeah, Ive added -advmethods and -forceasm. I started getting gromacs after adding these tags. Are there other useful tags like these ones? For speeding up performance.

-forcesse

You probably don't need it for you P4, but it can't hurt.

Not a 'Welcome New Member' but a 'Welcome Back' to bill_amer
who returns with his celery 700 and introduces to the fold his Athlon 64 8)

And he's got the bug to uprade.. sorry, do a necessary rebuild... with improved components
(Which hopefully will leave enough bits left over to build another box  )

Might introduce him to the idea of blades 8)

Hang on... just realised he's probably gonna be on my threats list as well soon

Oh well.. it's for the good of the team I suppose 8)

Welcome also to all the new members we've had recently, 'Welcome to the Addiction'

No points yet... but I would like to welcome John_Hooker with his Athlon 2600+ to the fold.

Just started tonight under his own name.

Apparently said something along the lines of "Put those 'Bog Trotters' in their place if (crossed out) when we can"

Fold on O Mighty Brothers 8)

Hello guys :)

Post by Shad0 » Tue Mar 23, 2004 1:16 am

I've been reading quite a few articles on this site for weeks now, so when I found about your folding@home team I decided to help.
At the moment I'm folding@work actually, but in a few weeks I'll make myself a good comp thanks to all the things I read here, and it'll fold too ;)

Well, since I took the plunge from lurking to posting, I'll just post briefly here. I have an A64 3000+, p4 2.8, and dual p3 @ 933mhz running folding 24/7. I'm not really familiar with folding@home or how much of a contribution those machines will make, but hey--everything helps right?

Also, I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone at SPCR for all the great advice I've leeched off of you guys =)

Welcome to the both of you and all others.

Hopefully you'll enjoy your new addiction, just remember to back of a little if you get too much like NullObject
(Just wait a little and he'll reply.. denying everything. Round here he's known as 'Mr beaten to 100 by Pete' )

bcassell, I think you'll be pleased with your output off of those machines.... Well.. at least until your threats list starts to grow
Then it becomes a whole different game

Welcome, enjoy and Happy Hunting those on your 'Hits' list's.

Thanks for the welcome :) i fold under the name genetomcat. My challenge is to have machines that fold very quiet, as i'm sleeping in the same room with all the machines. But that's why i'm reading SPCR :)

I have a Shuttle Zen folding 24/7 ... it's a P4 1.8A with one lonely fan ... very quiet. The other machine is too loud right now, but better parts are on the way. It's an amd 2500+ overclocked to 3200+.

Waiting to become a folder is a PIII 1.1, overlocked to 1275 ... it's very quiet but i need another case and quiet PSU. Oh, and all those machines are using laptop harddrives, which run quiet and cool.

TomCat,

I enjoy the same challenge. Making a PC quiet is relatively simple. Making one quiet that runs at 100% cpu 24/7 is a much greater challence.

Interestingly, the component that makes the most noise in my "blade farm" is a Tripp-Lite surge suppressor!

Time to mod it.

Reminds me of my own non-PC noise problems. Frankly, I don't care much about the noise my HTPC makes, since the fridge is usually louder. Maybe I should start SilentFridgeReview.com. :D

If you started a SilentLifestyleReview.com, I would join it in a heartbeat. You could do things like review Silent fridges, Silent Dishwashers, Silent Laundry Machines, Silent Cars....

Funny, the quieter things get, the louder everythig else is!

And I'm planning on modding my fridge too. :D
