Advice on a Core 2 Duo system

Post by nicuurs » Fri Dec 15, 2006 4:46 am

I plan to scrap my old XP 1700+ and get a new rig. The components I have in mind are the following:

Asus P5W-DH-Deluxe
Core 2 Duo E6300
Scythe Ninja +
Fanless Nvidia 7600 GT (probably Gigabyte)
2GB RAM (I have not decided yet about the brand and model, it depends on what I can find here in Cluj-Napoca, Romania)

As a case I plan to use (at least for now) my old Antec 3700 BQE.

My questions:

1. Do you have any other sugestions regarding the above mentioned components? and, most importantly
2. Will the Ninja fit in my case?

Thanks in advance.

The motherboard is a good choice, but you have to ask yourself the question: "Do I need all the features this board provides?". If you are not using RAID, Wi-Fi, Dual LAN, etc you might be able to find a cheaper board. Every 975X or P965 board will do, speed differences are minimal. Skip the nVidia i680 boards at the moment, until the problems are solved.

2GB is good as well. Make sure you choose at least PC2-4300 memory if you are not overclocking. The Core 2 Duo E6300 has a FSB of 266MHz and that provides a memory bandwidth of ~8533MB/s; exactly what PC2-4300 can provide. Only buy faster memory if you are overclocking (PC2-5300 - FSB-333, PC2-6400 - FSB400, etc).

The Scythe Ninja will most probably fit. Your case dimensions are 18.3"(H) x 8.25"(W) x 18.6"(D). The Antec Solo case dimensions are 17.5"(H) x 8.1"(W) x 18.5"(D). The Ninja fits in the Solo for sure, so I guess the same is true for your case since it has greater dimensions.

One thing you need to be careful of is whether the Ninja will fit on the motherboard. You can check Scythe's website for that. Many Core 2 Duo boards have capacitors really close to the CPU socket that can interfere with the heatpipes of the Scythe Ninja.

Thanks for the information.

Crisi, I plan to use the Wi-Fi and Raid, and I am getting a discount for this board :) About the case, why didn't I think about verifing the dimensions? I'm getting old ...

pyogenes, thank you for the assurance. I have verified on the schyte website, but it's always best to have a user account.
