Since cards have no moving parts......yes, they are silent.
But for future reference black is always quieter than beige. That's a well known fact.

Black is also faster, another well proven fact.

but the black one will also cause higher system temps because it is absorbing so much light

I would prefer that my card reader make some kind of noise when inserting a card because right now it's hard to tell when it properly connects. (Sorry to break the string of funny comments!)

Well...my beige card reader has a built-in floppy drive, and it does make some noise. Guess I'll take it back. Heh.

Of course it is, there's even this
famous scientific study that proves it.

Leprocauns and fairies dont get along because there...you know parts dont fit together because although leprocauns are small, they arent THAT small.

How about remoting every component, including the monitor, mouse, and keyboard, to another room? I guess the only drawback would be that you'd have to move to the other room, too, but if you're going for true silence be prepared to make some sacrifices.
(GG, rough night?)

Tom P, that will work great if you paint that room and every object in it jet black. The other down side is you'll have to buy 500W floodlights to light the room decently.

Or maybe blacklights instead? (Side benefit is that oldtimers can then drag out their old paintings of Jimi Hendrix on black velvet and have a psychedelic experience.)

Its true, an aluminum case does act like a heatsink. A really, really, really bad one thanks to the worst TIM joint possible thanks to 3+ inches of air....

Hmmm. Then obviously a copper case would do a better job.

You'd still have the problem of the 3" of air acting as a very poor TIM. Maybe if you filled the case with a solution of copper dust suspended in mineral oil....

Copper dust + mineral oil + electrical equipment = FIRE
Although I did play with the idea of building a copper case for my mineral oil submerged computer. I actually bid on a couple of copper tanks on Ebay, but unfortunately (or is the fortunately?) I didn't win.

How about troweling in Arctic Ceramique between all of that hot stuff and the completely thermally superior copper case? Would that be a problem with airflow?

3" of thermal paste would also be a terrible thermal interface, since they have an very low conductivity.
And lets not go into what that much thermal paste would cost! Move over $1000 heat pipe case, its $1500 of thermal paste!
